Title: BR The Gathering 2008
Post by: ThongPrincess on July 29, 2007, 02:48:24 PM
Yes you read it right, 2008.  Last night some of us got to talking about dates for next year. Karen mentioned she has to request her vacation time in December, so we made a decision about next year's gathering.

Location: Creekside Lanes - Winston Salem, North Carolina

Unless something drastic happens, we will hold The Gathering July 24 - 27, 2008.   So mark your calendars and prepare to join the best gathering around!  Don't miss out on all the fun - bowling, eating, bowling, eating, bowling sleeping, bowling, and the pattern continues.  Oh and there is a whole lot of socializing, laughing, and did I mention eating and bowling?

I am sure there will also be a little golf, poker and pool for those so inclined.

I'm in, but I will be in the same situation as this year, I will only be able to be there on Saturday and then only till around 4:30, but I will be there again.

I had a great time at this year's, I got to see several people I have not seen in a long while, and put some faces to some screan names.

One was taken at Saturday Night's dinner.  I believe it will be posted soon.  I brought my camera, but for some reason didn't take it out.  Next year, it will be put to use.

No threats or you won't be invited back.  Next thing you know, people will be threatening to take video and make documentaries.  That's bad for people like me who have bad-hair (and bad-face for that matter...) days every day.

I think a few people were "sleep bowling" this year, which is totally acceptable.  Anyway, what a great group of people.  We're looking forward to being there next year.

No threat, just a promise  Besides nothing will stop me from coming. If not invited, I'll just be a party crasher

Hmmm video the event.  I have a camcorder, great idea I'm not sure if it would be a documentary or more suitable for Americas Funniest Home Videos

Sometimes a better option all around, you don't know what you are doing and if it is really bad, just chalk it up to a nightmare!

I did manage to get a little bit of video taken, but mostly of the wife working with Ron.  I do have a take of Alakazam rolling one, and the great form of Portside.  That guy is a bowler!  I didn't get a crowd shot, and I'm not sure why.  I seem to have missed Toma, Nollster, and Strider this year.  I probably should have had control of the camera on Fri and Sat instead of just Sun.

I will post more later. I am working on trying to put together a small video from Sunday of us all bowling. If I can get it to look half decent I will post it as well.

All are welcome!

The cost is your own travel expenses, meals, and lineage for the games you bowl.  Ron gives us the league rate.  He also provides coaching for those interested.  He is an awesome coach.  If I didn't need another 11 years to get full medical at retirement, I'd be making a move to NC

The Bragging Rights Tournament is just that for bragging rights and Rone gives the winner a 1 of a kind T-Shirt.

For those who arrive by Friday, Ron runs a Mixed Scotch Doubles which is a lot of fun.  It can be very amusing, especially when a certain person leaves interesting splits for her partner (I did much better this past year).

Come to one and you will be hooked.  Many of us start thinking of the next years as soon as the current Gathering ends.

Allow me to chime in.  I'm in total agreement with my fellow attendees.  It's a great time and since our first one it's the first thing we plan on every year.  The wife and I always have a good time.  Di says to say "Hi" to everybody.  The only thing that would keep us away is a disaster.  We're already looking forward to seeing our old friends and making new ones.

One year we actually did wear name tags for Saturday's events.  To be honest, the ones who really want to hide behind a screen name don't show up.

Hide behind a screen name?  What, like "ThongPrincess"?

My wife, who is not into bowling all that much had a great time last year.  She's already looking forward to it even with our busy schedules.

Joe Falco - I'm very much looking forward to meeting you and bowling with you (as long as it takes).

Those wonderful people we met last year - we're excited to spend time with you again.

People thinking about their first gathering - we'd sure like you to come out and join the fun.  Nothing like people who like bowling.  Good stuff.

baseballfrk8998,
I am sure we have had 19 year olds there before and maybe even younger. You are more than welcome to come, you will have a great time...parents as well.

One of the things I love about bowling, it don't matter what your age, sex, skin color, hair length (or no hair), ability, profession (we have even let lawyers come), education (we even let a college physics professor come), or skill level, we love you all and all are welcome at The Gathering.

The only thing we are not too crazy about is a bad attitude so just leave that at home.

Looking forward to the next big show already!!!
My staff at Creekside should be out of the mental ward by then.

Bowl great!

Only this year I won't make the mistake of playing 27 right before my PBA experience league.    If you thought I golfed bad...

It's hard to beat Tanglewood during the week.  I think it was under $30 to play all day at two different courses.

OK, I am in.
My wife is on the fence.
She is a recreational bowler. She will be happy to bowl a couple games a day, but will need someone to convince her there will be other things for her to do while I am grinding away on the lanes.
Any input?
Any other "better halves" going that are not in it for the bowling?
By the way, we will be looking over the area very closely.
Ohio winters are getting old and we both like NC from a climate standpoint!

Novawagonmaster. There is also golf, might be able to team her up with my wife do some sightseeing and shopping although I am loathe to let my wife out of my site with the credit card

Strider will have some homebrew available at his house along with a pool tourny.

We also quit bowling around 5-6 PM Friday and Saturday and have supper together.  Scotch doubles start around 9 PM Friday nite.  Shortage of women in NC, so its best to have your own partner.

Just under 6 months to go!

I should be getting an awards voucher from Southwest after this weekends flight to Vegas.  I'll be booking my flight soon.

Uptheboards -

We have been doing this for 5 years and there has never been any violence of any sort.  The people who attend are genuine people who have a passion for the sport and enjoy meeting fellow bowlers.  You will never know what you missed, but that is your loss.

Any input?
Any other "better halves" going that are not in it for the bowling?

My wife came along last year and had a blast because of the people we met (whereas I have fun in any bowling alley).  Mind you, she was a 103-averaged bowler before the gathering last year.  Since then, she's enjoyed bowling more and her average is now approaching 120.

It's the people that are her draw.

We're looking forward to seeing everyone again this year.

The return of the 11-inch pin Paradigm, baby! (g)

I'm also bringing an overseas Columbia Ricochet Revenge (really beautiful-looking ball), plus my old long-pin AMF XS.

I'll be drilling my own stuff by then and I might be able to find something I can slap a weird drill on just for kicks.

First full grain pale ale came out great.  Oatmeal stout is in the primary now.  I hope to have at least two more styles ready by the Gathering.  Maybe a brown ale and some kind of strong Belgian, for those wanting to try some home brew.  I'll have some rot gut American mega brew on hand for the timid.  Small entry (probably $20) Texas Hold Em will happen for the 3rd year.  Bring your pool sticks if you have them.

Hopefully my finger won't swell like crazy again this year.  For some reason, I've some odd minor injury several years now.  Maybe I'll rent out the services of my Magic Dishwasher (Ron Clifton certified).  Maybe I'll get lucky and score another ball from Jesse this year.    Anyway, looking forward to seeing some old friends and making some new ones.  Hopefully SrK will be able to make it this year.  Gatherings wouldn't be the same without him or the Thonged one.

Great, some new faces in addition to all the fine familiar ones.

I'll try to hit up Ken from Let's Go Bowling for some more prizes.  Maybe since Ron was a guest on his show he'll kick in a little more.

There's getting to be a number of us staying at the Extended Stay.  Maybe we should ask for a group discount.  This keeps up maybe I'll have to make next year's reservations before we leave.

Really, I can't say it enough.  There's no finer group of people you'll ever meet, the staff there treat us like family, (well, like family they actually like!)  and go out of their way to make us feel at home.  I had a little trepidation about what it was going to be like before we went to our first one, but after that experience you couldn't keep us away.

We'll also be there on the Thursday afternoon and we're truly looking forward to it.

Bowling is thirsty work, and there's nice cold beer there to help cool down.  I don't know about anything else, we just drink beer or wine for the most part. I haven't had a chance to sample Geoff's efforts, and that's my fault entirely.  Maybe this year.

In general,
Thursday is for the early birds.  Not too many people will arrive early.
Friday is kind of a get to know you time.  A lot of talking and informal bowling.
Saturday is the Bragging Rights Tournament and dinner together, later is poker and pool at my house.
Sunday is more free time for bowling, maybe some 1 on 1 coaching time with Ron.

Nothing is set in stone, but that's been more or less how it's gone the last few years.

The Bragging Rights Tournament is generally in the afternoon.  That is kind of the Main Event followed, as Strider said, by a group dinner.  If you can make it to only some of The Gathering, Saturday is the time to be there.

If you are a golfer, Toma and Nollster set that up for at least Thursday.

As Kev3inp said there is Scotch Doubles Friday night at about 8PM.  Whoever is there during the day generally goes to dinner together and returns for the Scotch Doubles.  This is a regular happening at the center.  The biggest problem is finding the females.  Us womins (Ron's lingo) double up so the men all have a partner.  Sometimes it is a good thing, sometimes not so good - just ask Toma about that one

Over the years the Thursday group has grown and so has the Sunday.  Last year I alsmost didn't get to work with Ron Sunday due to the number of people who stuck around.

No matter when you join us, you will find the people who attend are great and Ron, Karen, and the staff at Creekside are the best!  You will not be disappointed.

Just a quick update on the Scotch Doubles Tournament.

Do to schedule at the center the sign in for the tournament is from 6:30 - 7:30 pm and the tournament starts at 7:30.

We have about 20-30 teams that show up on a regular basis and as TP has pointed out, we are always looking for women.

It looks like either we have to get off the lanes earlier to get in dinner before the Scotch Doubles, eat at the center, or dine after the tourney.

Good to hear from you Willy!

Stormed1, even if your foot isn't healed, if you're not too far away, you can always show up to put some faces to the names.  Actually I get my heel looked at Monday.  I'm hoping it's nothing serious, but I've had a lot of pain for several months.

Bad weather Saturday, so I bowled in a tournament instead.  A little chilly for brewing today, plus got a late start with the time change.  Hopefully brewing a Saison Dupont clone next Saturday.
