Title: BR2007 Dates
Post by: SrKegler on January 12, 2007, 11:13:03 AM
I just got off the phone with Ron Clifton (MagicCarpet).  This years gathering will be held Jul 27-28-29.  Lanes will be available on the 26th for those of you that arrive earlier.

Address:

Creekside Lanes
1450 Trademart Blvd
Winston-Salem, NC

The hotel of choice seems to be the Extended Stay.  They have the best rates and easy access to the bowling alley.

When the date gets a little closer I'll check with the ball companies and see what freebies we can get from them.

Hope to see all of you there this year.

Yes, Ron is still running the scotch doubles.  Have to bring your own partner though.  Seems to be a shortage of females in that area.  If I remember correctly, the last time Pchee was there he found some at a place called Silver Fox if you need a partner.

Speaking of which, if anyone has Pchee's contact info, let him know about the gathering.  Even if he doesn't bowl, it would be great to see him again.

Also, as mentioned on the other post, I will be hosting a no limit hold em poker tournament at my house again this year.  I live 15 minutes from Creekside.  I have a pool table and a dart board, so there might be a tournament for those as well.  If nothing else, they will be available for those eliminated from the poker.  If the weather is better this time, I might do some kind of cook out as well.

I seem to recall a few of the womenfolk were paired up with more than one partner for the scotch doubles.  I'm sure they think that's the way it should be.

I got dibs on Linda for my Scotch Doubles partner!!    I'll be there, probably with Toma -- can't wait!!!

That'll make the golf outing on the 26th then.  Tanglewood had a $36 for the day special last year -- I'd assume they'd have it this year, too, but I'll check as the date approaches.  Can't beat the price on a fantastic golf course!!

TTT.  Still plenty of time left for anyone considering the trip.

Beans (Beans Pro Shop) will be donating a bottle of his new "Secret Sauce" bowling ball polish.  Hopefully the pro shop won't have an issue with us using their spinner for any one wanting to try it.  If nothing else, I'll be happy to polish any equipment on my personal spinner for anyone wanting to try the product.  All Beans asks is that every one who tries it posts a review.

I can hardly wait to see Jesse break double digits on the radar gun.

D*mn Toma!!  Twins and a new baby boy?!?!?  You're crazy!!  Congrats, by the way -- on the days when I'm not cursing the "Big Guy" for "sticking" me with my boys, I'm thankin' 'im for giving them to me!!  In fact, we were just laughing about the bacon incident this weekend...well, that and the quick detour south to Winston-Salem!!!  North after the bypass and, next time I fire up that stove, remind me to NUKE the pig!!  Tastes the same with MUCH less smoke!!

I'm having hernia surgery next week, but should be in fine form for the Gathering!!  Might even have a few weeks of PBAX league under my belt 'til then!!

Toma,

Congrats!  I will try to leave at least a few normal spares this time  I might even make it interesting and roll a few strikes

I am toying with the idea of driving out this year.  I just bought a new '07 Toyota Corolla and am considering breaking it in.  It will depend on what happens to gas prices.

Toma...

Twins experience is going pretty well now. It started rough as Josh needed
to stay in the NICU (neonatel intensive care unit) as he was breathing
challenged for awhile.... then both he and Sharon had to get through a
jaundice episode.... so what started off with lots of drama has settled into
a good daily routine. Sharon has been sleeping though the night for nearly
two months, Josh is teasing us with the occasional full night.

I am getting lots of baby time as I am on a 9-month sabbatical from work and
playing "Mr. Mom"

They reached 5 month a couple days ago. (In fact, as I type this they are
both napping - one in my lap, the other over my shoulder.... - All I can
reach at the moment is the computer keyboard.)

Ron Clifton owns Creekside Lanes in Winston Salem, NC.  Every year for the last 4? years, he hosts a get together for all the Ballreviews people who feel like showing up.  You get to put some faces to the names, bowl with a bunch of great people, and get some coaching from an outstanding coach, and all it costs you is lineage which is always reasonable.  We bowl mostly on a house shot, but he sets up a bragging rights tournament that is played on several challenging conditions.  We go out to eat a few times together, and there are some extra curricular activities as well.  Toma/Nollster set up a golf outing last time, and I had poker, billiards, and homebrew tasting at my house.  Last year, we had donations from several ball companies that were very generous.  Ritchie from Lane#1 showed up personally and donated an entire case of balls.

I drove up twice from Alabama twice and had such a good time, that I moved here permanently.

As the time draws nearer, can those from the area planning to host events (or can I help them?) collaborate on a schedule of events?  I'm addicted to bowling before all else, but there's nothing better between sets of bowling than a good game of hold 'em or some kind of outdoor BBQ event.

How nice was the course at Tanglewood?  Our company had an outing at Bryan Park and it's really nice.  I played the Champions course (I believe the PGA plays here) for $47 last Friday.  About $10 more than what Toma said Tanglewood cost.  The Players course is a few bucks less.  What kind of scores did you guys shoot last year?  I just played my first few rounds in years, so I'm pretty bad.  I might play, but don't want to slow you down too bad.

For the $36 to play all day, Tanglewood was one of the nicest public courses I've played!!  There are 120+ bunkers, so you need your sand game and there's not too much water.  It's not too long -- a real nice test of golf for sure!  I shot a 74, but I don't usually go that low and I can't imagine I'll be anywhere near that since I haven't been able to touch a club coming off my hernia surgery....I don't remember what Toma shot -- he's got good game for a relative newbie!!  It would be nice to get a couple or 3 foursomes!!  And don't worry about what you usually shoot -- it's all about having a great time with some old and new friends!!

I just didn't want to slow everyone down excessively.  Maybe one of you guys can give me some pointers at the driving range.  $36 to play all day (with a cart I assume?) sounds like a great deal if the course is that nice.  There's a course near work (~30 minutes from Winston Salem) that's $14 to ride all day.  It's only 9 holes with two sets of tee boxes, but it's a great deal for a duffer like me.  I doubt it's as nice as Tanglewood.  I can show you where it's at if you want a second day of golf and want to save some money.  One of the other guys from work told me about another place.  If he has the time tomorrow, we're going to play there.  That will be my 4th round in 10 years.

I just looked at the Tanglewood site.  Looks pretty nice.  On the virtual tour, #13 is a 395 yard par 3???  Hopefully the tee box is elevated 50 yards and the fairway is rock hard.  The price says it's $37 for 18 with a cart.  May's special says you can play all day for the same price during the week.  Hopefully they'll do the same thing for June.

Bump.  Less than 2 months to go.

I also found a better than average course that's $16 after 2 pm.  It's about 10 miles NE of Greensboro.

I don't know anything about the courses Toma, but I can ask around.  Tobacco Road isn't super far away, but more than I'd want to spend on a round of golf.  I also wonder why it's so expensive; it looks like they couldn't even afford much grass.  I don't think I've ever seen so much sand!  The other place looks decent.  I'm not in any kind of golf shape, so one or two rounds will be plenty for me.  What day are you guys coming in?  I would assume Thursday or maybe Wednesday?

There will definitely be a poker tournament at my house.  There will be pool also; if we get enough interest, I can do a tournament for that also.  Last time, we just had people playing after being knocked out from the poker.

I'll be arriving Thursday afternoon.  Not sure what I'll be doing, perhaps my friends and I might bowl a bit.  Another thought is to get in a round of golf, but my game is in shambles (went to the range last week to do something golf-related for the first time since last spring).  I have a bad case of the slices and don't hit near as far as before.  But of course, that's why golf isn't easy.

Hey Andy,

I forgot what your screen name was here.

We usually have 3 different patterns for the bragging rights tournament.  I think Ron said the Reno pattern would be one of them.  I don't know what the other two will be.  I don't know if he has the pattern, but I'd like to see the TOC shot - 50', but fairly light oil.  Sounds like a unique challenge.  If that isn't possible, a modified Shark pattern might be a good choice for one of them.  Maybe Cheetah or something short would be a good contrast for the other.

While I realize it is a just for fun tournament, remember all levels of ability participate.  My recommendation is to not make all 3 of the patterns tough ones.  Just my humble opinion.

True.  Ron usually has a house pattern for one of the three.  I was mostly providing a wish list for the others.  Even though all skill levels are present, it is 100% handicap, and high (house) averages are more likely to shoot below their inflated averages once the walls are removed.  I can attest to that personally.

LOL, I totally see your point.

I was lucky to break 500 for team and double. Singles we just won't talk about.

That tourny should be a year long and they can get rid of the 7:00am squad, it should be outlawed. Nobody can gamble all night expect to bowl at 7:00am.

oh wait, I guess if you take out the gambling all night deal it might work better, if that was only the excuse I could use.

I can't use gambling as my excuse, but I did fly in from the Coaching Summit in Vegas.  I arrived at 11:40AM and bowl at 2:30.  My coach was concerned about being mentally fresh and strong with the amount of info received doing the Bronze certification and other seminars.

500 woud have been nice for ANY series there.  My 4th Nationals in Reno, 2 Womens, 1 ABC, and 1 Open, this is the first I won't be getting a check

I beg of you, PLEASE don't put out anything that remotely resembles the "R" shot!!!

OK, but I might tell Ron to put out the BTM shot.  I think I averaged about 20 below my PBA league and 30+ below my reno scores there.  The BTM made Reno look downright easy.

My flight arrives 3:55PM Raleigh Durham.  By the time I get my luggage, rental car and make the drive it will probably be somewhere around 7PM.  I'll probably just do like last year and relax at the hotel Wednesday.

I'm not sure about bowling after having gotten up about 3AM  (Pacific Daylight Time) to catch the 4AM FlyAway to LAX for a 6:05 AM flight.  But then with the time difference and being a Bowl-aholic... who knows?

I am using a Southwest voucher, so the round trip flights only cost me $7.50 (plus the points I earned from other trips - flights, rental cars, and hotels).  Flying straight into Greensboro (which Southwest doesn't do) would cost about $400.  I did fly into Greensboro until last year.  Last year I used a voucher also and the drive isn't bad at all.

  Hey all....

Been trying to work out my way down to the gathering this year, but it is
just not possible. Between the twins (Toma should understand this) and my
planning a family reunion vacation in another state that starts on July 29th,
I just couldn't work it out. I was really looking forward to it and wanted
to bring the whole lot of us, but the logistics and driving time are just too
prohibitive.

Really wanted to see everyone even the crazy people that run the lanes.
And, I will certainly miss the great cookies.

Dr. Joe

ps... will make every effort for next year.

I haven't heard from SrKegler in some time.  Even if he can't make the gathering, I hope all is well with him and his family.  Joe Falco also informed me that he will be unable to attend as well.  I think a last minute trip came up that conflicted with the gathering.  We might be having a small get together this time.

Um, Okaaaaay?  Does that mean you're attending the gathering?  I've never seen you post here before.

Head count for poker:

Me
Toma
JPRLane1
a_ak57 + 2 friends

Probable - Ron and Andy (and Cindy?) from Creekside

If you're not doing anything bowling related Saturday night, feel free to come over even if you don't play poker.  There is also a pool table for those who play.  I have a little home brew left to try.  I've been really lazy lately and haven't made a batch in months.  Depending on the weather, I might have a small cook out also.

We hit the road bright and early tomorrow morning.  Well, tomorrow morning anyway, and we'll stop someplace in SC for the night, and arrive Thursday afternoon, if everything works out OK.  I can't wait, I need this vacation.

The weather doesn't look good for our golf outings.  It's been raining off and on all evening and there's plenty more in the forecast for the next few days.  Toma and Nollster are playing tomorrow afternoon and Thursday morning.  I may let the weather dictate which day(s) I join them.

Anyone who gets into town Thursday afternoon can come to my PBA experience league (Viper) if they want.  After watching me suffer, there is always plenty of time afterwards to give them a shot.  I would especially like someone in another PBA league to give them a try.  Our scores seem lower than many report here.  I'd like to see if we don't have many talented bowlers or if the shot is tougher than average.

Hey guys I have a bit of a problem here.  I sprained my ankle last night during tennis and sprained it pretty bad.  I was suppose to have my PBA league tonight Its not till 6:30 so i am hoping to give it a shot.  Its not my slide ankle but it hurts to walk around at this point.  I am off work rest of the week so hopefully I can rest it enough to make it up there saturday.  I would say even if I can't bowl i woould come hang out, the only problem is my car has a clutch and just drving home from tennis last night wasn't the least bit fun.  I hope more than anything to make it i will keep everyone updated.

I love the gathering every year.

This year things are different...REALLY  shouldn't go...

But I'm looking for an excuse to stop down for a day or afternoon.

I have this garage I'm trying to clear out....

A couple of NIB balls and righty single drills  (http://"http://www.ballreviews.com/Forum/Replies.asp?TopicID=169833&ForumID=26&CategoryID=12")

Now just maybe if I can convince myself I need to deliver to the gathering....hmmmm...

Well so far so bad, i wasn't able to bowl in my PBA league tonight, I tried a few shots in practice and just couldn't make it work.  Hopefully rest today and tomorrow and maybe I can bowl saturday or at least make it up.  It mostly interstate for me so I wouldn't have to shift too much.  I was really looking forward to bowling and unveiling the new ball speed.  Hopefully I can but if not there is always next year.

100% Ditto. For those of you who don't know what "Ron Time" is, you'll just need to show up at the gathering next year to find out. We had a good time. Even my wife, who admittedly enjoys watching bowling but not participating, got into the action and enjoyed herself immensely.  What did you people do to her?  As a side note, she finished 2nd in the bragging rights tournament while I finished 2nd last.  Luckily, she's been merciful so far.

This having been my first gathering, I was a little worried about meeting everyone else.  I've been to gatherings of online communities for other reasons before and have had bad experiences.  For any of you who are considering going to a gathering, let me tell you, this is a fun bunch of people to be around.  I think I forgot we're talking about bowlers here, the most down-to-earth people out there.  For everyone whom we met, we're glad we did.

The only problems were not having enough time to spend with everyone, missing some people that couldn't make the trip, and cutting the annual tournament short a game. For some reason, people wanted to eat instead of bowl.  I'm still trying to wrap my mind around that concept.

We're already looking forward to next year.  Ron, Strider, everyone else, let us know if there's anything we can do to pitch in and help organize, promote, or what have you, for next year.
