« on: January 30, 2007, 01:58:31 AM »
If any one could tell me what these tool are use for that would be great, some of them I think I know just want to be sure.  Also if these are something I should own or would they be a waist of money?

- Ebonite Workout Tool with 5/8" blade

- Round Rasp File

- Bevel Knife

Not sure about the Round Rasp File, but it sounds like these are all thumb adjustment tools.

The workout tool is a cylinder with an edge on a long shaft that you put in the thumbhole and pull to take out material, usually leaves grooves in the thumbhole, so you have to use something (like the file) to smooth the thumb out.  The bevel knife is a pretty similar concept, but it's a long blade that you take out material by moving from side to side, rather than up and down.  You can also adjust the bevel of the "lip" of the thumbhole to change how smooth or sharp you want it to be.  I'd just suggest getting a bevel sander.

A rasp file is for coarse hand filing of finger and thumb holes. It's better to open thumb slugs, but you still need to sand the hole to smooth it.

Is there a difference between a bevel knife and a Bevel sander?  didnt know if this was a typo, or an another tool?

Thanks

Lemme try to explain this to you in as simple of terms that i can.

A bevel knife is a 3 bladed (triangular) knife. What are its used? Well there are many uses of this took. Mainly it is used to smooth off a sharp edge or hole in a bowling ball. I dont know if you have ever felt a sharp freshly drilled hole before, but it is quite sharp. This took allows you to smooth out thoes sharp edges quickly and easily. Heres a picture of my bevel knife:

The alternate uses are but are not limited to: stabbing your opponent

The workout tool, well i had no clue what this was until i actually got one. Basically its a metal shaft, and at the end is a double sided circular blade. The top circumfrence is smaller than the bottom.
Heres a pic of the entire tool:

Heres a pic of the blade itself:

I use this tool to open up the inside of a thumb hole or finger hole. Lets say you swelled up while bowling and the pro shop is closed. I can use this and slowly remove layers of the thumb slug on the sides, or any part of the slug, so that my thumb can get in. Sometimes it cuts smoothly, sometimes it dosent.

Here is where a bevel sander comes into play. Basically this is a machine with a motor in it that spins very fast. On the spinning end a special Sanding Disk (which is a round piece of sandpaper of rough grit) which smooths out any rough spots in the hole. Normally in a pro shop, we use this tool to smooth out any roughness made after using the bevel knife and the workout tool.

Joe, keep an eye out in the "wanted/for sale" section.  That's where I obtained mine from.  A lot better price than that $75, too.

I believe KingCranker sold bevel-sanding shafts for Dremels for about $10.  You could PM him and see if he's got any left.

Yep - just check your local Home Depot, Lowe's, or other home supply store.

I needed to open up my thumb hole an used my Dremel tool, it was not very clean lots of rough edge's, plus I opened up a bit to much.  Thats why Im looking into these tools so I could change it out myself.

So What type of bit should I buy?  Also is there anyway to see what size thumb insert without taken it out?

Thanks everyone
