What are the "Keys" to Bowling Success?
« on: March 24, 2005, 12:59:22 AM »
I have read and do read a lot of post on here and have contributed a few times.  As I read many times I shake my head in wonder and awe as to the lack of "getting it".  Now I in no way am casting judgement because for a long time I never "got it" either.  Why does bowler A always seem to bowl well every tournament / event and I am hoping the stars align for me tonight? I am not a Professional nor care to be.  I have had several persons tell me I could of made a run at the tour but my life took a different road and I am 100% fine with that.  I have a great career, family etc etc etc.  Now back to the Bowling talk.  I bowl a lot for a non-pro and do well in a lot of Tournaments and bowling usually pays for itself.  Have won several city titles and placed well in state / ABC's as well.  After struggling with every thing from balls, to this or that I have latched on to a few Keys that are paramount in being a good bowler.  I am sharing and perhaps it will help you as well.

1. Be yourself.  Learn your game and go with it.  I have had several persons try to turn me into everyone form David Ozio to Mark Roth.  I am neither.  I am me and I do what i do pretty well, just as they do.

2. Consistency. Do what you do every time. How can you ever know what is wrong or fix anything if everything is always different.

3. Get your A game down 100% and master at least one other game 75%.  Versatility is the key to success.

4. Spares..... enuff said.

5. Balls are not the answer.  How do i know this (I have drilled 500 at least).  Set your ball on the approach up at the foul line and see how many strikes it gets on its own.  It is the Indian not the arrow.

6. If you want master the game, master yourself.  Flipping the Bird after a ten pin or kicking the rack is never going to make a pin fall.  Grow up and control your emotions, both at high and low tides.  You can't tell if I am on 7 in a row or have missed 7 in a row.  My head may be going 100000 miles per hour but my body is calm.

7. Learn breakpoint theory and carry angles.  Why you carry and why you don't carry.

8. Develop a system for moving.  I personally use "Focal Points" down lane that allows me to keep my swing long and loose.  For more on this see Mo Pinels See it,Feel it, Do it manual.  You can hit the second arrow all night but what if one was headed in, one was headed right etc etc

9. Body alignment and recognition. I have coached several persons who line up in a manner that will never allow them to hit what they are aiming at without pushing or tugging the shot.

10. Bowl a lot,read a lot, ask a lot and have fun....

11. Average means nothing.......

12. If you bowl in a house that is a cake shot... get out at least one night somewhere else where you are challenged.

13. Balance.

14.... feel free to add.

Nice answer "Bones", but we both know you made more being a Dr. than a PBA pro, and I'm not just speaking about financial rewards.
