Anybody tried bowling with a broken ring finger on their bowling hand? I broke it last night at work trying to grab something and my finger got caught. It's all purple and sore now, can't even bend it. I'm gonna try to bowl with it sometime this week, leaving my ring finger out of the ball.

I would suggest taking time off and letting it heal, I tried that at one point and now have a dropped ring finger to show for it.
Bowling caused it to crack the bone worse and cause much more grief for me, I would really suggest splinting the finger and just waiting it out.

Iv broken my pinky 3 times and my ring finger twice. It was a lot easier for me to bowl without my ring finger since i tuck my pinky. shouldn't really be a problem but i would still take the time off bud

I would take the time off. Think of it like this, if you bowl with it and potentially make it worse where you may not be able to get the same function out of it like before you broke it, your bowling will really suffer. LET IT HEAL. Its just bowling, not like your bowling for a billion dollars just take the time off.

Thanks for all of your replies. At this point, it looks like I will have to rest and let it heal. It is very painful, and just moving it a little is killer.

I broke my right pinky in January. Well, actually it was the part of the bone that is in the hand. Basically splintered it. I had to get a pin put in and all sorts of other crap. I ended up drilling a left handed ball the first week after I broke it. Been bowling left handed since. I can hold a ball right handed, but my wrist is still incredibly weak. I've been averaging in the 140s and constantly getting better lefty.
So, if you aren't in any major leagues, you could try switching to left handed...I still bowl in a mixed league.

Your ring finger is the most responsible for lift on the ball. Bowling with a fractured ring finger could be disastrous long-term. Seriously. See a doc, treat it appropriately, and take the summer off. You'll be back next fall ready to go.
If you push it, you may not be back for far longer - if at all.

I did with a pinky broken, but that's nothing. I did break the tip of my ring finger in a softball injury and still bowled that week and pretty well. It really depends on where the break is. I would advise against bowling for two weeks.
Split, tape and ibuprofen.

Well, I tried bowling 3 practice games today. I have one of those finger splints on my ring finger, the metal one with the blue sponge inside. I wrapped my ring finger and my pinkey together with rev tape. Bowled only with my middle finger and thumb inside the ball.
My first few balls were slow just to get a feel. Little bit of pain, but not much. Ended with a 170. Next game was a 194, and the third was a 207. Being that I had to slow the ball down, revs down, and I had to relax so that I don't yank it and tweak the finger. I was actually a little more accurate! My friend was freaking out watching me bowl, but was kind of funny to watch since I wear a mongoose, have a Band-it on my forearm for my Tendonitis, and my wrapped up broken finger. I'm just glad that I can at least still bowl! Phew!

My ring finger did not get broken but was torn apart at the second joint. Surgeon put it back together and taped it to my pinky. I took a couple of balls to my driller at the time and he drilled a hole in each ball for my index finger. I bowled with my index and second finger in the ball for many months. Worked fine!

My dad acualy broke his middel finget a long time abot so he had a ball drilled for the ring and pinky...
He found he had more revs on the ball and used that for a long time as a second ball..

yea i broke my finger about two years ago while i was at vincennes....i broke the tip so it was a little bit worse with bowling. it was my middle finger too. it was kinda funny because the doctor said sure you can bowl if you wanna, so i went and tried about three days after i broke it...yea that didnt go well...i was supposed to wait a least a month and let the doctor revaulate, but i made it 3 weeks before i had a tournament. i got second. of course i had to go up a finger tip size and now its that size. you would be better off waiting or risk doing some serious damage to your finger

Thanks again for all of you comments and insight! I went out again and although I still have pain in my ring finger, I can bowl with it virtually pain free. Still have it in the finger brace and taped to my pinkey, leaving my ring out of the ball. Yesterday had scores of 184, 221, 237, and 199. Doing ok with it, not causing anymore damage to the finger, so I guess this will do until my finger fully heals. Thanks everyone.

I'm still bowling with my broken ring finger and had a decent set yesterday! Had games of 190, 201, and a 277. Since i'm using only 2 fingers, there has been a lot of stress on my forearm, but as long as I don't try and force the ball, the pain is bareable. I have been "fairly" accurate with hitting my targets and with a tournament coming up in a couple of weeks, I guess i'll still be 2 finger bowling for a little while longer.

We had a guy do that here on the MJBT. He didn't bowl the best but it worked. Use a splint...
