Legal to use ball Cleaner in any tournament?
« on: July 02, 2007, 11:52:27 PM »
Guys, this may sound like a silly question, I just like to know if it is legal to use a ball cleaner or polish (hand wiping method) during a tournament. I'm asking coz I saw some players in my area using a ball cleaner during a tourney. If it is legal, what type of cleaner / polish is legal?

Thanks

It all depends on the event.  There are some events that will put in a clause that there are to be no alterations to the surface after the start of a block, and that would include using some of the approved items.  It is incumbent upon the bowler to know the rules for the particular event...

as long as its just a cleaner and doesnt change the surface you can use it DURING any league or tourny, except nationals which you can do anything once you weigh the ball in

just make sure it doesnt change the surface of the ball and your good

Unless other rules apply, the list that JohnnyRocket linked is the law.  Leagues or tournaments may have additional rules limiting what you can use and when.  In tournaments, you are allowed to clean your equipment by more than just wiping it with a towel as long as they have no rule prohibiting it.

You're still restricted to "approved at any time" cleaners, though.  Cleaners on the "Only before or after competition" cannot be used during a game or block (and doubles/singles almost always count as a single block).

I believe Nationals does not allow you to clean your equipment during play.

The products that are specified on the USBC list as being acceptable during competition can be used while you are actually bowling in USBC certified competition.

Some tournaments have their own, more stringent rules regarding such substances.  If a tournament (or league, for that matter) has a rule prohibiting the use of such substances, you may not use them.

On edit - I see that a few others have covered this since I started composing my reply.

I think the list is ridiculous. Why not put it accross the board and not be allowed to use any of it during competition?

Why is it that there is always one guy who doesn't like the rules there is absolutely nothing wrong with cleaning a ball while bowling

The other reason Im asking is because during the game I often found some dirty (looks like a belting marks) stuff on my balls upon the return. Just wiping with a towel wont really took out the dirty marks, so think its better to use the cleaners. I was just worried that the dirty marks might affect the ball reactions on the lanes.

Anyway thanks for the replies guys.
