Build it up, watch it fall
« on: October 07, 2014, 02:01:21 PM »
Is anyone else tired of all the hype surrounding certain bowling balls before they are even released? Just within the last few weeks, we have had the build up for the Hammer Bad Ass, which is getting built up purely because of the name, and to some degree, the Roto Grip Sinister is being built up. Nothing is being pushed into our faces so much as the Storm Crux is though. NEW CORE! GROUNDBREAKING TECHNOLOGY! MORE HOOK! UNBELIEVABLE PERFORMANCE! Every day I check Facebook, there is something new about how great this ball is going to be. I understand that, yes, it is marketing, but isn't it just over the top at times? I don't deny that it will be a good ball, maybe even a great ball on the right conditions and in the right hands, but can anything really be as good as they are saying it is going to be? Nothing can live up to the hype Storm is giving it. End rant.

If they don't hype the ball why buy it.

Apparently "hey heres a new color" doesn't push sales as much any more.

They HAVE to hype it! How else are they gonna make up lost revenues on their "can't miss" balls like, the SYNC; the Zero Gravity; and the Optimus??!!!

Zero Gravity was not a miss. Sync was, Optimus, looks like it will be a miss, in all my years, I've never seen such an odd reaction from a Storm ball like I have the Optimus.

This Crux reminds me of the Invasion, that ball was marketing heavily and struck out fast.

The jury is still out on the zero....I dont know many who like it. I'm not sure on mine yet. I don't know anyone who hated the sync..."its too early, (insert tears)..."

and everyone loves the optimus....I honestly can't wait for the solid.

The IQ solid was a miss, the modern marvel and s were misses, both newer reigns were misses.  Fire road...miss.  Those were misses! :)
In the bag [Infinite Physix, Volatility Torque, Night Road, Phaze III, Burner Solid, Hustle AU]
*Now Testing* IQ Ruby, Renevant, another IQ Tour solid
Coming soon...???

On what planet was the Marvel S a miss? I can agree the others were misses, I didn't purchase as I saw those "misses" coming from a mile away. As a matter of fact, I wish Storm would go the Roto route and concentrate on a few balls instead of making so many.

It's called marketing strategy.  I think someone will get fired if they just say "Here is our new ball, come buy it".  They hype it up, make it sounds like the best thing EVER, and even if it's a flop, they just sold a ton of flops, and they will sell a ton more.  That is the importance of sites like this, review the balls, but what I would like to see is more honest reviews, not staffer's that hype a company because they have to.

Here where I'm at, there are a lot of people are doing exceptionally well with the Optimus, and before that, the IQ Fusion and IQ Pearl.

In regards to the Sinister, my son absolutely LOVES IT.  In the last 2 weeks, shot 738 and 685 during competition.  He's 17, with a 200 average.

Balls being actual performance flops are few. Balls that are sales flops are much more common for any number of reasons.

The stronger cover Storm ball tended to miss cause they weren't quite the normal Storm look or shape...the Zero is a huge seller for them...

I agree, calling the ZG a miss is mind boggling.

As others have said, I'm not sure who gets to determine what is truly a miss. Every ball that was mentioned has been great for some and terrible for others. Almost all bowling balls are like that because it's about matching ball to bowler to conditions. Sure, there are some balls that seem to roll great no matter how you drill and prep them and no matter who throws them, but those are rare. As such, I think it's inaccurate to call any of those balls misses unless you can quantify that with sales numbers and such. Even then, it's not always indicative of bad balls. It could just be market saturation.

As for the hype, yes, it's over the top, but it tends to work. They know the buzz words the average meathead bowler looks for - big hook, strong backend, continuation - and they splash them all over the place. How can you blame them; their job is to sell bowling balls. Saying, here's another $200+ ball that basically does the same thing many of our older balls did doesn't exactly make people want to run out and buy!

A qualitative way to look at it is a short shelf life and is not "user friendly" . If the ball doesn't match up for a large percentage of bowlers, it can safely be called a miss. If its one of those balls that can only be used on Wednesdays after 7 pm, during the second week of the month while wearing khakis and and a long sleeve shirt, then its a miss.
