New balls going with less weight?
« on: December 07, 2005, 04:17:50 AM »
I haven't purchased a new ball since I bought my TiBoss II but have been looking into a new Backyard Bully for longer length down dry lanes. I was talking with my favorite pro-shop guy last night and he said he doesn't even carry 16lb. balls any more. Since technology is able to carry the pins better these days he said we don't need that much weight. Looking through a couple of ball review sites, it appears that most are rolling 15 and even 14lb balls. Is this really the new trend? Can I expect the same pin carry with a lighter ball? I have carpal tunnel so the lower weight will feel better but I won't do it at the expense of pin carry.
Thanks!

Basically that's true. A trend to 15's and lower is one exactly because of the technology change. the reduced weight will help you wrist some and you really won't notice the weight difference. I've made the move and it's almost negligible.

I use 16 lb balls .. recently I went to an EBONITE Demo days where they had the HAMMER HAWG. Of all the balls I tried I favored that one. Asked the Pro Shop to get me one in 16 lb weight. Four weeks later he was telling me it was difficult to come by the heavier ball. I canceled my order.

It has more to do with carry.  16 lb equipment has just a tiny bit less deflection than a 15 lb ball.  That could mean the difference between a stone 9 pin or not.

That and a lower weight offers more control.
