Harder Being A Spectator?
« on: November 15, 2005, 12:53:30 PM »
I've made this observation in the past about myself and others and I think it is totally cool. Being a spectator, I think we go through a lot more stress during the game (whether it be bowling, football, etc.) than most of the players do. We get all riled up and scream, yell, and cheer and some of the icons simply take what they do in stride and soak in the applause or the jeers.

The best way I can relate is recently I watched a friend go for his first 300. When it came down to that last ball my stomach was churning upside down and all over the place, my palms were sweaty, my heartbeat was fast, and I was silently saying to myself "c'mon, i know you can do it!!!! When he released that ball and it was rolling down the lane I was all up and excited yelling at the ball to smash the pocket and when all the pins fell everybody was in an uproar. It was quite awesome. When I rolled my first 300 I didn't feel anything close to the intensity that I felt when I watched somebody else go 1-12. I mean my own experience was intense because it was my dream to have my father see my first and it happened but this intensity I felt was different like WANTING IT FOR SOMEBODY ELSE.

I'm sure others have felt this way.....or am I completely off my rocker?

Dustchid, you're crazy! Just kidding. My oldest son watched me get my first 300, & I was able to see my oldest son's & my 2nd son's 1st perfect games & I'm sure we felt what you described while watching your friend. As we were all nervous & excited about our own, I think it was more intense watching & hoping for someone else.

Its tough when you are watching something or someone you believe in but have no real hand in it. You are out of control of the situation which then makes caring that much harder. We control whether or not we do well in our own pressure situations. Hence, that makes those situations maybe no less stressful, but its your stress---not you trying to feel it for someone else.
