Science experiment:

1- Have someone roll a Tonka truck into your leg at 20 mph...see if it hits hard

2- Have someone drive a dumptruck at you at 20 mph....see if it hits hard

A 12 lb ball will deflect more than a heavier ball so it doesn't have the driving forward "force" that a heavier ball would have.  You would definitely notice a difference even if you throw the 16 lb ball slower, it will hold its line and drive forward rather than deflect much less than a lighter 12 lb ball.

very important to roll the 12 with a bit slower speed if you want decent carry. I would say around 12-14 max mph. the ball needs to roll NOT skid to have a better chance of carring. Some cover prep might helpp also. IMHO speed is most important, but by no means will a 12 carry the same as a 13, 14,15, or 16. Hope that helps a little.

if you''re bowling on drier lanes or are a power player who can create more entry angle into the pocket you may be able to carry better. but better than a 15/16 pound ball ? i don''t think so.

Throwing a helicopter realease like the southeast asians.
Then you will want to throw lighter equipment.
They want the ball deflecting like crazy in the pin deck area.

But to answer the question, 12lb balls use lighter cores to allow for the lighter weight, and AFIK Brunswick is the only company to use dynamic cores in equipment lighter than 14lb.

Momentum is mass x speed..

so 16 lbs at 20 mph = 12 lbs at 26.6 mph..

unfortunately, the reaction you get on the lanes is dependent upon speed of the ball regardless of the weight of the ball.
at 26.6 mph you are more than likely not going to get the reaction and angle you need to carry.. unless you have a ton of revs..
If you throw the ball straight at the pocket like a rocket then throwing it harder will help it hit like a 16 pounder..but then throwing harder usually reduces accuracy for most people..

I throw 15lb and I'll just say that that's just over 12% of my body weight.  I'm thinking about moving down in weight, it might feel better.  I do believe carry would suffer at times though.

A more appropriate equation is Kinetic Energy (instead of momentum) ...
KE = 1/2*M*v^2

The point is still this:
The momentum or kinetic energy of any bowling ball varies linearly with the mass of the ball.

If light as a feather Missy Bellinder can roll 16 LB balls, so can you!

If I remember right, Columbia made a ball about 5 or so years ago that would... I think it was called someting like the TI Messenger light?  I don't remember exactly, but there was a great review on it here.  That thing, at only 12 or 13 lbs. would hit like a wrecking ball on steroids!!

I have physical issues so I have to throw a 12lb ball. And going from 15 to 12, I thought would hurt my average. Yet, I went from 187, to 203 in just a month.
Yes it will deflect at times. But mostly with the speed I gained and increased accuracy, it has paid off.
But usually when it hits the pocket.. "Hulk smash" and it sends pins flying. I get more messengers than ever before. My speed went from 13-14, to 16-17mph.. and let me tell you it feels great to hit the pins that hard and watch them splash like I have never seen my ball do before.

When I dropped from 16 to 15 many years ago my carry seemed to improve.  I believe it was because my rev rate and ball speed both increased allowing me to stay in balance between speed and revs.  Recently I dropped again to 14.  My carry dropped a little on some conditions but not bad.  There is another young guy in our league with a great power release but throws 12 bs due to wrist problems.  His carry is very good but he is rev dominant which causes him problems on flatter patterns where he needs to stay straighter.
