High RG Strong cover
« on: October 12, 2017, 07:26:37 PM »
Looking for a list of high RG strong cover balls past or present. I only do well with high rg stuff in one house I bowl. I know the Show off isn't very well liked on this fourm and I already have a street fight. I will probably get another street fight but wanted to see any other options. BUT I do feel another street fight with same layout but different cover prep is the way to go.
Thanks!
The harder I try the harder they fall

Hmm RocketShip with some surface is coming to mind if you could find one.

Ah, and along those lines the Torrent as well. Could be getting into the area where the cover isn't as strong as desired though.

Still say as far as three piece balls go going to be hard to beat the Burgundy Hammer remake as far as being both fairly high RG and very strong cover stock.  Reads the lane very well even for those of us speed dominant and its well under $100.  Main draw back is it starts hooking at your feet and has more of urethane shape back end.

The honey badger goes pretty straight for me. Also had a couple others throw it, including my PSO who plays deeper than I do. Even on the burn after 5 man. I do throw 14, so that could be it (much lower diff than 15/16 in this ball). But it is my weakest ball for sure. Weaker than the RG Hectic. Not what I was expecting from this ball, but definitely filled a need.

Mind if I ask how it's laid out?

Dang it, I keep putting it off due to money tightness, then I come on here and see everyone talking about it. Shush!!

I didn't go with a "scientific" layout on this one. Pin is above the bridge or ring - don't have it in front of me. MB is kicked right of the thumb a little bit. My PAP is about 5" over and 1/4" up, so the pin is likely in the 5-6" range. Best guess, it is close to a 5x4x3 layout. Or maybe 5/5.5x5x3/3.5.

Now, you might say that is why it is so long and somewhat smooth, but I've had other asymmetrics drilled similarly that handle way more oil and/or hook more. In fact, my code red is drilled even "weaker" and yet it handles more oil, hooks earlier, and is a beast off the spot.

You might also say, well the 14lbs honey badger isn't technically asymmetric, so it should be compared to a similarly drilled symmetric ball. I also have some of those drilled nearly the same. The honey badger is still weaker.

As a side note, I'm starting to realize that every 900 Global poured ball that I've owned - HB being the first actual 900 Global ball - has been relatively smooth. In fact, they give me an almost urethane-like control reaction, but with resin shapes and hitting power. I had the AZO Cheater, Outbreak and Legit when I threw 15. And now I have the Monster Kraken, Lochness and Boogieman. All relatively smooth. Legit and Boogieman have been the most angular, but nowhere near hockey stick.

As I said, I thought the HB would have been stronger, but it's actually more of what I hoped it to be. It's just surpassed that hope a little and is longer and smoother. Still, it fills a need. For me, it is that sought after resin ball for control on the burn. I don't know if it would still have that same control on completely fried lanes, as I have not seen those yet since I got the ball. Like say, 8+ games into a tournament.

I'm really tempted to buy a 2nd one, drill it a little stronger and go with slightly more surface. Just to see the difference. It's a really good ball to have. I just don't see what some others are seeing. Maybe I somehow got a blemished ball. It does hit hard and carry light mixers all day.

You might be onto something with the 900 Global pours.  My Stealth Bomber solid sure seems like its a bit smoother than it should be with that high mass bias core and hybrid cover stock.  Of course being speed dominant none of my balls turn all that hard unless its bone dry.  Also haven't seen wet enough conditions to fairly judge it but at least on THS its milder than I expected.  Have also heard the Lane #1 cores didn't match up with 900 Global near as well as they did Brunswick pours which is much of why Lane #1 is basically dead.  Not bagging on 900 at all as I love my Bomber.  Just don't get to use it much.

I'm wondering if because Chris Barnes is their star pro and big marketer the fact that smooth balls are his thing and he's involved with the designs.... maybe they lean on the smooth side.

Might also have to do with their resin supplier as that is provided by general chemical companies like BASF.

thanks all for the suggestions, a few I haven't considered. Since I've been doing well with my Street Fight I'm thinking of picking up another and drilling it the same. on the other hand I have not done well with low RG stuff in this house despite different cover's and strength's so it seems to be my best option.

IDK. Now Im kicking around the idea of a lighter weight strong ball. I pick up the heads and mids too early for anything strong enough down lane in this one particular house I bowl at. Lofting did wonders but to sore afterwards. Gettn old sucks.
