Post by: Twitch 1 on April 14, 2014, 04:10:29 PM
Where is the best on line place to get your drills sharpened, for a good price. Lost my connection, use to get them for $5.00 each. Just checking around. THANKS

If you are handy you can touch them up yourself with a green wheel on a bench grinder.  I think the green wheel was about $40 at Grainger.

I had mine done at Innovative (link below) recently, they did a great job.  IIRC it was $7 per bit plus shipping.  Jayhawk also has a sharpening service.  --  JohnP

Save the shipping.  Look online for any tool sharpening company local to you.  One with an Anca or Walter CNC machine.  Simple drill geometry is easy to do and won't cost too much.  Grinding by hand you can have uneven lips resulting in a drill that doesn't want to center itself and wobble or the relief on each land will be different resulting in chipping due to overheating.  Grinding by hand introduces too much heat resulting in stress cracks and or tensile stresses which can make them crack even quicker.  Carbide drill bits in bowling balls last along time, don't be cheap and have them ground cheaply or by hand.  They are an investment, treat them as such.

Called a shop to check on sharpening. The guy says they do not have a CNC machine, but they have a machine that sharpens bits. Should I try to find someone that has a CNC machine?

No, you don't have to have them sharpened by CNC but you will get a better product.  What city are you in, I might be able to recommend a grinder to you.
