strange thing
« on: May 26, 2015, 01:32:16 PM »
I started bowling at a new house this fall and due to an issue with the ball return and oiling pattern I wasn't able to swing the ball like I normally do. It required me to play a direct outside line to score. Now at a different house that will allow me to put more hand in the ball and swing it I find I can no longer do this. I watch guys I used to out hook 5-10 boards play inside so I know the shot is there. For whatever reason I have lost that ability to cover boards. Not complaining or looking for the solve all to fix this. Just find it odd that during that league I have forgotten how too. I don't view this as a bad thing just requires me to work and understand what I can and can't do when the lanes start to break down. I would normally move in deeper and move with the oil. Currently I am struggling with this as the ball  doesn't have anything on it other than an over under reaction with no carry. This is new for me and with only three weeks in the summer season I haven't made the correct adjustments yet. I am sure with a few weeks of practice I can come to embrace the new style with the simpler is better approach. Anyone else had this happen? Did you choose to find the issue and correct it or did you embrace the new style and move forward. I am guessing at this point I will spend the same amount of time trying fix the issue as learning the new style. Just wondering what others have done.

Could it be while bowling on the other lanes that your ball died and you just never noticed due to the line you were playing? I had a similar issue when I bowled at an old wood house where I need to take hand out of the ball I figured out I had unknowingly changed my hand position.

could be that you aren't coming around the ball as much
i find that as i got older, i was trying to be more accurate and came up the back of the ball a bit more.
i can still turn it plenty, but its definitely not my A game on the sport conditions

You made adjustments to your release to play more outside and didnt know it.

I experienced this the past two weeks just from not bowling as much.  I started cuffing the ball which made the ball hook earlier and die down lane.

Thought it was the sport pattern or ball,  but saw other guys with less hand hooking it and I couldnt.

Finially saw my hand was cuffed and adjusted it back to proper position. Once I did everything was back to normal.
…… you can't  add a physics term to a bowling term and expect it to mean something.

You become a product of your environment.  I'm going through a bit of the same thing.  With most of the sport shots (and my rev rate/speed) I'm better off more up the back of the ball and more direct on the lane.  When I get to a shot that is best attacked by looping the ball, I'm no longer very good at it.  I used to hook the ball a lot, now I really have to work at going left to right and coming around the ball enough.

I think Dave81644 may have said it better.

Happened to me...Played one house inside, at another I had to play straighter, Now my inside game is gone.

I have had the same problem for a few years now and it's been extremely frustrating. The worst part of it is that I don't have the time to practice to work on it so I just deal with it the best I can, but it's been tough to deal with.

I am still able to keep my hand under the ball and get around it at the release point
But it takes some effort on my part to remember to do it
I have so focused on having a relaxed grip and loose arm swing which gets me a much better projection through the heads and a lot more accurate
I don't consciously turn it any where as much as I used to
