Title: Certified drilling license?
Post by: Arone24 on May 17, 2013, 09:48:21 PM
I recently started an at home proshop in my spare room because the guy in my home center is a stuck up prick.

Well, now, because he treats his customers so bad, a lot of them are coming to me to work on their balls. Well evidently he is livid about the whole deal. He told someone it was against USBC rules for me to drill someone else's balls. Is there any truth to this? I have an engineering degree and measure angles and distances everyday. I am on the wiki at bowlingchat.net daily. I am no expert and haven't claimed to be. As long as the balls I drill meet static weight requirements and all USBC specifications, is there any violation?

This was supposed to just be a hobby but his people skills are sending all these people to me.

Thanks ahead of time.

I believe he is just blowing smoke but I am no expert, just a bowler who has had several run-ins with people saying that something was against USBC (or ABC) rules and I have learned that whenever they say that, just ask them to show you where in the rulebook.  Most times they can't and the other times it is a mis-interpretation issue.

As for drilling certification, there is an outfit that provides the training and certification for proshops.  Here is the link for that:
http://www.ibpsia.com/ (http://www.ibpsia.com/)

I am sure that someone with proshop experience will comment directly on this issue of yours.

Oh, and when we did have a proshop in our local center where I bowl, we had both good and bad drillers.  So just drilling in a proshop is no guarantee of quality, you have to shop around and sometimes you will find a better driller in a home.

you do not need any certification to drill a bowling ball.  If you plan to sell new equipment, you will need a Tax Id from your state.

USBC only requirement is that the ball meets their static weight specs after drilling.

Thanks guys. I appreciate it. A friend and I have been looking into the ibpsia certifications.

It's pretty sad. We have 4 bowling alleys in our town. There are two pro shops. The one run by the guy I was talking about which has every bowling innovation known to man and another one that is run by a super guy but his equipment is probably older than what I have. If the guy who's such a prick would just treat his customers like customers, he could have the business of all 4 bowling alleys. Instead they are calling me or driving 3 or 4 hours elsewhere.
