Title: Changing coverstock question
Post by: who_knew on April 11, 2008, 07:52:54 AM
I am getting most likely getting a ball spinner and was just wondering how many coverstock changes a ball can generally handle

The usual rule of thumb is if you can still see the logos and serial number, the ball is still of legal size.  Manufacturers target the high end of the ball size rules so that balls can be resurfaced or altered a few times.  There is no set number of surface changes and different types of alterations will affect ball size in different ways.

As far as I know, the cover does not get worn out from too many changes.

Whenever you use Sandpaper, Abralon or Nylon on a ball, you ever see resin that comes off ?

Thats the ball ...too many cover changes will decrease the size of the ball.

Also there is no min size of a ball..Just a max size

Wrong!

For balls weighing 13 lbs or more, the minimum circumference is 26.704"; minimum diameter is 8.5".
(See Bowling Ball Specifications:  http://www.bowl.com/Downloads/pdf/Specs/EquipManual/EQM-BowlBallSpecific..pdf)

Judicious use of abrasive materials can result in many, many surface adjustments and resurfacings.

There is a new (relative to ABC ruling) USBC ruling that allows the user to re-imprint the ball's serial number manually, if re-surfacing erases the serial number, as long as the ball meets the specs.

Yes, that would be what I said in the entire first paragraph.
