cheater balls?

is there really such thing a cheater ball? if so what are they? how could they possibly be a cheater?

I would consider any resin or particle ball a cheater ball.  That is the way they were referenced when they were first introduced and in my mind the term still applies.

Also, sometimes bowlers who play close to the same line will practice with a very dull surfaced ball to create an area for them to play in. This might fall into the same catagory.

I know plenty of old-timers who say urethane was "cheating." If it wasn't rubber or polyester (one old guy won't even accept plastic/poly) then it's "cheating."

I'm sure 30 years ago we had people calling for the return of lignum vitae.

Pointless to make these distinctions. If they meet USBC regulations, they're legal. The only "cheater balls" are the ones drilled outside legal specs, or are the ones that show up on the USBC banned list.

The ball is only as good as the bowler can release it. No way there can be a cheater ball unless its maybe bigger? lol but not gonna happen

oh i see. i suck too much to use something like that..heh..i thought they had some with some cool inside thing to make it knock down the pins better...heh.. i read about SD-73 "Classic" is that some sneaky ball

If it has too much top/bottom (3 ounces) or side or finger/thumb (1 ounce) weight, according to USBC rules, the ball is illegal to use during certified copetition.

If it weighs more than 16 lbs, it's illegal.

If it's larger than 27.002"  or smaller than 26.704" in circumference, it's illegal. (Forget the actual size)

If it contains anything metallic inside the ball, it's illegal.

I know many balls that look like, for example a fury, but the shell or core is different but they are passed off as a ball that everyone knows is fine

The Roto-Grip SD-73 Classic, and the Visionary Immortal Solid and Immortal Pearl were just lucky to be approved before the USBC decided to change the rule on RG Differential Limits (currently its none higher than .060 and used to be .080).  Because they were "ok'd" before the rule change, they are granfathered in and are legal.  

While there are some benefits of having a ball with that extreme amount of diff., it also has its downfalls.  Those balls wont be great for everyone.

Any strong mass bias ball....(my Favorite the Awesome Revs)...set up properly to match your league shot allows one a TON of area.

On my shot there is a big backend present and tons of midlane oil.

Mass bias strong (for midlane)....get your feet deep and if you have any speed and throw left....a piece of the headpin is a strike.

Other cheater balls right now....the Total NV...and the Black Widow and BWP.

These balls are incredible....their cores carry the day!  

Match up your drilling and strike away!

Last year it was the One series!

PS I've seen some new ones that fit the description ALSO...
Attitude Shift, Cell, No Mercy...strong mass bias balls set up right!
PS...how are they cheater....?  Their cores and surfaces create such recovery that once one gets deep inside on a crown or top hat pattern they give one many boards of strike area at the breakpoint to carry.  If wide they recover if tight they are stuck in the wet stuff but still carry.  Other balls just a few years past force one to play closer to the oil line and have very little miss area to strike!s
Open the door...see what's possible...and just walk right on through...that's how easy success feels..

That was a problem a long time ago.  The story I heard from an old timer is that guys would drill into the ball and place mercury inside and plug the ball.  The mercury inside did something that caused a different reaction.  Anyhow, that is supposedly the reason behind the PBA no plug rule.

Cheater balls?  I'd say they are any ball mentioned by someone who refuses to accept that things don't stay the same over long periods of time.  Cheater balls are often mentioned by bowlers who start stories with "Back in my day...".
