Title: Check out this guys number so far this season in 1 league

10-300's and 9-800s in 16 weeks. I wonder if this is a real league or 9pin no0tap since there arent any 9's in any score.

My guess is no-tap since some of the other bowlers aren't in Bowl.com (unsanctioned).  Plus it is a Casino league so I feel it is all for fun.

Yea, it's some kinda no-tap league probably, since Bowl.com only has four "Bruce Rodgers" and non of them average over 180 something.

It's a no tap league.

A no tap LEAGUE?

They actually have such a thing? And they actually report averages from it?  ???

WHY ON EARTH WOULD ANYONE BOWL IN THAT?

Some things just escape me I guess.   :-[

They don't get reported to USBC.  They simply get reported on the online league secretary program so the bowlers can keep up with the standings and such.

Personally, I feel all league information should be kept online for bowler review.  Unfortunately, not much at my center, if any, is online.

It was more a question than a statement. They are obviously online somewhere, because they were found and talked about here.

I just found it hard to believe that anybody would even try to keep up with the "averages" in a no tap format, much less actually write them down and record them somewhere.

There are a few such leagues at my local center.  They are non-sanctioned, but otherwise treated like any other league.  Wins/Losses/Averages/Subs/Position Rounds/Standing Sheets, etc. are tracked just like any other league.

People love the no-tap leagues just for the fun aspect of it and getting to see the higher scores up on the monitors.

People love the no-tap leagues just for the fun aspect of it and getting to see the higher scores up on the monitors.

I don't get it. I mean I REALLY don't get that. Never have, never will.  9= a strike? Why stop at 9? Why not make it 8, or 7? Heck, lets make it 5= a strike, that way everybody can lie to themselves about it.

People love to revel in their lack of actual talent, and look up at the scores and be happy with a fake score that was basically just handed to them? To me, that is the height of ridiculousness.

It's like giving kids a trophy for just showing up. Oh wait, they do that now, don't they? Doesn't matter if they can actually play the sport, just show up and everybody gets an award.  Just great.  ::)  ::)  ::)  :o

Why not just sit and drink beer and make believe you bowled, then lie to each other about what scores you just thought up in your head?  What's the difference? You were already lying to yourself about it. Just change it from no tap to no throw, and you can sit around and flip a coin to see whether you struck or not. Heads you strike, tails you don't, and all non strikes are 9/. When you get too drunk to flip the coin anymore, you stop and everybody gets strikes from there on out.

No tap bowling.  I cannot begin to describe my feelings about it. If from this post, you think you begin to detect that I have a dislike for no tap "bowling", then multiply your suspicions by a factor of 1,000,000, and you might be close.

" No tap bowling" is like those other phrases that just don't go together, like "military intelligence" or "jumbo shrimp".

They have 8 pin no-tap tournaments (+handicap)

The amazing thing about no-tap is just how hard it can be sometimes.

I've seen it time and time again, all the hotshots with 200+ averages bowling in them and they can't hit a 900 series.

Yes they throw a lot strikes in league, but they forget about all the multi pin leaves they have.

I don't see the problem with no-tap bowling, though I don't care for doing it myself. It's a game within the game, and the people that bowl it are well aware that it isn't a real score. I know we want bowling to be more competitive, but there ARE people who bowl just for the fun of it. They aren't lying to themselves about how good they are, they just don't particularly care how good they are. If it gets some people bowling that otherwise wouldn't (and it does, because it's the type of short league that bowlers bring their non-bowling wives and girlfriends to), then it's a good thing.

There isn't anything wrong with no-tap bowling.  And you can't convince how it isn't the essence of bowling or anything like that.  No-tap bowling has been around longer than I have been alive and I have been bowling for 40 years.

Scratch bowlers should revel in the idea of no-tap bowling.  No-tap bowling encourages the middle average bowlers to compete with the high average bowlers.  Someone with a 200-210 average can compete game-to-game against a 240 average bowler if they get strikes for 9-counts, or at least they think they can.  But we all know, no matter the format, the higher average bowler will prevail.

So embrace no-tap bowling (especially the weekly no-tap doubles and the such) since it is another way high average bowlers can take the money of the middle average bowler.

IF YOU WANT TO BOWL NO TAP, THEN GO RIGHT AHEAD!

Yes, no tap bowling has been around for ages. Heck, it was even around back when I was coming into the sport. Thing is, I didn't get it back then either.

Why would ANYONE want to go "real" bowling, but keep "fake" scores? Even back when my average was in the 140's and 150's I didn't like no tap bowling. It always felt wrong to act like I was accomplishing something that I wasn't.

See, I would rather go bowling and shoot a 150 game and have it be my actual score, than I would to go "no tap" bowling and shoot a "fake" 200 and know I didn't deserve it.

You want to bowl for fun? Fine, then bowl for fun, just take your actual scores and have all the fun in the world. You want to get better scores, then get up off your duff and learn how to actually get those scores, don't fake it with no tap scores.

If you want to bowl no tap, I suppose that's fine if that's what you want, but I just don't understand how that is what ANYBODY could want.

I don't understand why anyone would eat celery either, but it doesn't bother me if they do. Bowling is about entertainment and anything that lets people enjoy themselves while bowling is good for the sport.

My main house annually runs a 6-game No-Tap tournament during the Christmas break. You switch 2 pair after every game to mix things up a bit.

It's not as easy as it sounds. Between the number of games and constantly switching pairs (that do play different), strikes and 9-counts are not guaranteed. After the first couple of games, it's a mental grind to stay sharp and not make mental mistakes. You can get away with a few bad shots over the night, but other than that there is little room for error. It generally takes a 270+ average to cash.

It's fun and it's challenging. Give the format a shot if you ever get the opportunity.

I used to bowl many no-tap weekend tournaments while stationed in Germany years back and found out that bowling these higher scores on a regular basis, even though no-tap, actually helped me be more comfortable when bowling a high score on non no-tap.  Helped my confidence I assume and not being utterly shocked with bowling 250s+.

OK, OK, you've made your points.

(But I still don't get it)

If you're  bowling for scores, they should be actual scores. If you're bowling for fun, scores shouldn't matter, except to see who buys the next round.

I just philosophically can't even begin to understand the premise that no tap bowling is founded on. As crazy as it may sound to some of you, the entire concept of why anybody would ever WANT to bowl no tap eludes me. Just as foreign a concept as if you were speaking ancient phonecian to me. I wouldn't understand that either.

Have fun. If no tap turns you on, then go get you some, but it is NOT for me.

Curious! Would there be more entries to an advertised tournament that was 'NO TAP' / 'SCRATCH' or 'HANDICAP'?

In a way it isn't any different than bowling on THS.  Some feel the scores bowled on THS aren't actual scores.

There isn't one way to bowl and all ways have their merit.  There are games on different conditions.  There are different formats.  Different scoring methods.  Just bowl what you want.

The important item in all of this........JUST BOWL!! The fact is that bowling has lost a lot of interest over the years. If no-tap peaks peoples interest, awesome! If sport shots, 2-handed, back-handed, whatever it is increases peoples interest and participation, that is all that matters!

The No-Taps I have bowled have high game pots each game of the tournament for both scratch and handicap, as well as brackets and eliminators.  Makes for some pretty fierce competition.

I'm a scratch league bowler and PBA Regional player. I avoid regular handicap formats like the plague, BUT....

Scratch no-tap, assuming a longer format moving each game across pairs, is flat out challenging. Having to hit the pocket solid almost every frame for 6-8 games is an accomplishment. To be successful, you really have to be mentally sharp. Much more so than in a stale everyday handicap environment.

Also unlike traditional handicap, skill usually rises to the top in longer format no-tap. Most sub-200 average bowlers don't have the consistency needed to hang with higher skilled players.

I'm not saying that I seek no-tap out, but I recognize the competitive benefits the format can provide. Too many write no-tap off without really considering what it can offer.
