How many people have a hard time bowling unapposed? Last Thrusday my team bowled this way. The first game was great, I shot a 221 and a teammate shot a 289. But from there it was down hill. Each game went down and it was so frustrating.

But how many other people have experienced this? And what can one do to make sure it does not happen?

BOWLING IS FUN NO MATTER WHAT YOU SCORE. BUT A 300 IS ALWAYS NICE.

STRIKE ZONE & PYRO. STAND 15 AND THROW 10 OUT TO 5 AND SMASH THE POCKET. AT LEAST THAT IS THE PLAN OF THE NIGHT...

It can be hard to bowl unopposed.  I have found the way to combat this, is to pitch in a pot where high man on the team gets the money.  Of course, you only bet maybe a buck or five at the most.  But, at least it keeps you pushing your teammates and keeps things fun and interesting.

We always played games to keep us motivated. Pot Bowling, card game and we did a sheet that cost you for getting hung, missed spares, making a split, and a reverse hang. So we were able to keep our focus and do well.

Run a team pot.

That's what we have done in the past.  We would throw in $5 bucks each and the winner for each game and total wood would each get $5. It gives the entire team an incentive to bowl better.  It'a amazing how hard people will play for $5 and bragging rights.

I find that it's the pace that screws me up bowling unopposed.  I've been in leagues often enough that have an odd number of teams that it doesn't bother me competitively.  The rule used to be that you couldn't start bowling on the other lane until the last man had thrown one ball.  They did away with that rule recently, I think, but we still do it that way.  We bowl real lazily to maintain the normal league pace and rarely finish more than half a game ahead of the rest of the league.

Our league has a rule that any team that bowls a team that is forfeiting or a vacancy has to bowl within 10 pins per man of their average to win a game and within 30 pins per man to win total pins.  You'd be surprised how difficult that can be if even one bowler has a bad night.  --  JohnP

John, that's how we win points against the ghost team as well.  For a four-man team, that's 40 pins within the team's average, which isn't that hard most of the time.  It's uncommon that everyone on the team is down

That 10-pins-per-man rule is, I believe, a USBC rule.

Two things I can think of from experience. 1) You can tire yourself out faster since the pace is quicker. 2) The fast pace doesn't allow the ball to dry as much since the time between shots is less. My ball, during practice for example, is usually saturated to the point a towel wont help it. During league, it's fairly dry shot to shot.

I would say, if it's a team pre/post bowl, pace it a little slower. Take breaks, etc.

However, there is the camp that would say that the faster pace can lead to higher scores overall. Maybe it's conditional. i.e., physical shape of bowler, conditions of oil, etc.

I used to struggle with bowling the blind team. I would always start out with a good game, then slowly decend from there. Up till last year I had this problem. Then I got great advice from a team mate on thursday nights. He said to help your own game while bowling unopposed is to bowl yourself, Beat your own self while bowling. I cant remember his exact words but thats pretty much what he said to do, so I tried it.........great results every since. Works while bowling tournaments too!
