Hey guys and gals, I know a few of you have had to deal with this before. Is it proper to give someone who subbed for your team last season a cut of your prize money? If so, how much is fair? We had a female bowler sub for our team for 5 weeks, and male bowler sub for us for 4 weeks. I think we should give them something, a couple of my teamates are in the middle. Help me out here. Thanks

I've never received anything for subbing in league. If I'd paid the league fees, though, I'd expect something in return.
However, subbing in nationals and state events, I've received whatever portion of the prize fund we cashed for.
Maybe a Starbucks gift card or something would be appreciated?

I subbed for about 6 or 7 weeks in a couple of leagues, and I got free bowling and any jackpot money I won as compensation. That's not too bad in my opinion.
-
Did they pay when they subbed? If so, then I would think
(#weeks subbed / Total weeks) * Prize money for that position
would be a good formula for calculating their fair share. If they didn't pay while subbing, then I can't see how they have any claim to the prize fund.

Its a tough call. I am on both sides of this this year. On one of my teams I had 2 subs bowl for 12 weeks here at the end. I am going to give them each something depending on what we get for doing this I am thinking $50 each. I bowled as a sub in 2 leagues for about 10 weeks each. I dont expect anything but, if recieved I will be greatful. If you are in a big $$$ league then you can afford to give them something to say thank you....
-
Maybe take them to dinner or something for appreciation, but a sub who is not responsible for league fees shouldn't get any of the prize money. They got to bowl for free for 4 or 5 weeks, and could have won money in brackets in stuff.
-
I am subbing for older nice guy that has cancer and in round 2 of chemo, there is no way i would take a dime for his spot. He and his wife refuse to let me pay the spot, i feel guilty about it as it is but the team is in 2nd place of 28 team 5 man league. So i know he enjoys us kicking almost every team we bowl weekly, i can still see the firs in his eyes to bowl though.
-
If they paid when they subbed then they should get a cut.
We make our subs pay, and each person's cut of the prize fund is based on the number of games they bowled.
If they didn't pay, then you don't have to give them anything, but a small token might be the right thing to do.
-
Why couldn't you take the total amount won, divide by total number of games bowled. Take that amount and multiply it by number of games bowled would equal the amount each bowler would receive.

I remember when I first started bowling. I paid for the league fees and the prize fund when I subbed, yet never received a dime of whatever the team won. That really got to me when I started getting into the bowling.
Because of that, I give subs 2 options. You can pay if you want to and in doing so, will receive a cut of what the team wins. Or you can opt to not pay, in which case you will receive nothing for the bowling outside of any gambling you do with cards, etc.
If a sub isn't paying, they are helping the team, yes, but they are also getting free bowling! I feel that as a team, we own nothing more than that. If the sub pays or doesn't pay, and we receive money for a team hi score, I will usually give the sub the portion they deserve as well since that's something specific to the night. Yes....I realize them shooting well also helped us win, but in the grand scheme of things, the points won during the season are done so during the season, not on one particular night.

I sub on Friday nites, I don't pay for bowling, so I don't expect any money from the prize fund. I figure my compensation is free bowling.

It IS next year!

I subbed for a team and ended up bowling 15 out of the 35 weeks. I received free bowling, made enough in brackets and pots, and when I was at the USBC, they gave me $50. I was surprised and happy. I did not expect that. I'm sure they sat down and gave like 10 a man at the payout. I guess this was the exception but no the rule !

This is sure a good question, I guess if you feel that the sub(s) help in any way, it would be gracious of you to offer them something. But like a previous poster put it, it was free bowling for the individual(s).

We split prize money according to what share of the league fees you paid. In my two leagues, I paid every single week, so I get 20% and 25% of the prize money for my team. If I'd paid half the season, I'd get 10% or 12.5% instead. One year, I didn't pay the first half, then started the second half when one of our teammates moved. He got the first half prize money, I got the second half (obviously, it was a split season).
If you give the sub anything, it's basically a tip. I'm sure it would be appreciated but as someone who's subbed "full time" and who's been a non-paying team member (basically a sub for only that team), I did not feel as though I deserved any of the money the team won. I never put my own money on the line, I don't get any in return. No matter how well your team placed or how well the sub bowled, they didn't pay for it. If they got in brackets or side pots and won money, that is entirely beside the point.

I appreciate everyone's comments. It is a tough decision. It is a lot to take into account. The comment about helping to get an extra envelope for team high game etc...was cool. I think what we'll do is divide the approximate amount of money ($400) that we will be getting per person and divide it by the number of weeks (36) and give each sub that amount. Which comes out to about $11 a week. Does that sound fair? It will cost each teammate $22 since we had two subs. Thanks guys

If they sucked, they get nothing. If they stepped up and bowled great and won your team some money, then that will be a decision that you and the other teammates would have to make. You may want to throw he/she a $50 spot from the entire team as a thanks but in no way do you legally owe it to them.

Back when I did sub, I didn't pay for bowling so I expected no money. When we do use a sub, the sub pays nothing and receives nothing.
If we had a regular sub and they paid the fees, then they would receive a part of the prize fund based on the number of weeks they paid.

Years ago we had a team member get transferred out of state for his job like 3 weeks into the season. We picked up a young man who couldn't afford to pay but was subbing in the league for a couple of years. Three of us split his fees for bowling all year and he just covered his pots. On payout night he was shocked when we gave him money. The 3 of us decided he deserved something for being there every week so we divided the piece fund by 5 and then split one share 4 ways and gave him one of those shares. He was very grateful because he didn't expect anything since he didn't pay.
