Where is the best place to purchase grips, slugs, ball plug and just general pro shop supplies for a non shop owner.

Most on-line shops are priced similarly.  A link to one site that has most of what you'll need follows.  --  JohnP

I've been purchasing Vise grips off of eBay (Up Your Alley Pro Shop, bowl300300) at pretty good pricing, $1 each.  Definitely pays off for me.  Had a ball drilled yesterday, and it would have been $10 more if the pro shop supplied the grips (at $5 apiece).

The problem I ran into with supplying my own grips when I went to a shop, they would charge me more to drill if I bought my own stuff in.....sooooooooooo I solved everyones problem and bought my own press and equipment and have no issues bringing my own slugs when I drill a ball.... I DO it myself.....

So what did you spend buying your own equipment?  To get good equipment runs around $10,000.  Mill, dodo scale, sanders, fitting devices, quarter scale, bevel knives.  Then there is the learning how to use the stuff.

Also if someone is selling slugs for $1 they are not making any money either.  It cost more than that to make them in time and materials.

There is already a point where pro shops are saying no to bringing in your own slugs and inserts.  There is also a point now where the quality of pro shop workmanship stinks as a result.  People want a quality knowledgeable person drilling their stuff but do not want to pay for it.   Most people that have bowling balls drilled are absolutely clueless as to fitting a ball to a hand.  I will tell you many pro shop operators are the same way.  I have seen many balls that have come into my shops that are just flat rotten.  The state of drilling bowling eqipment is only going to get worse.

I've had customers bring their own grips and/or slugs.  I charge half the price I sell them for to install them.  If they want to install them, I charge my price for drilling a ball without grips and a slug and give them the ball with the raw holes and let them have at it on their own, away from my shop.  When (if) they get the slug worked down I charge $5 to drill the thumb hole in the slug.  --  JohnP

for me to drill my own equipment I have no need for 10K worth of drill press. I have a local that lets me use his dodo. I am not saying I know it all already, but I know more than the other local yokel just by watching and asking questions. I have drilled for a few friends and such, and no one has a butchered thumb and they are telling their friends...I like to, if at all possible, watch the bowlers before I drill a ball for them.

I have a couple customers that supply their own slugs but they buy them from me in bulk. They are not a brand i stock so i special order them and they just bring them back when it's time to drill a ball. One of them is now using thumb molds so i just punch up the ball and he installs the mold and grips
