way to increase ball speed, without muscle.
« on: April 17, 2005, 03:58:24 AM »
Is there a good way to increase your ball speed without putting muscle into the swing? I have tried to hold the ball higher in the swing but that doesn't seem to do too much, but make my armswing taller and make it harder to control, is there a better way that will allow you to still keep the ball better under control?

Any help is appreciated.

well i have a pretty good release as it is, i dont want to screw with that.

I heard something a little while ago about dropping the ball into the pushaway??? Will that increase ball speed? How does it work?

Again any help is appreciated

THe pushoff thing.....Instead of pushing the ball out, like most people do, just drop it straight down.  Apparently that will increase speed, though I haven't done it.

Another thing is an accelerated downswing.  This is kind of tough, since basically what it is, is that at the peak of the backswing, you "push" down a little bit, but let go to maintain a free armswing.  It's like getting the speed of a full muscled armswing, but if done right, your armswing will be free at the release.  As you might guess, it'd take some practice of figuring out when/how long to push and to get back to the free swing.

Assuming your release is fairly clean as BrunZack mentioned, the only way you'll get more speed out of the swing itself without muscling it is to get the ball higher in the backswing.  You say it becomes harder to control, well, find an adjustment that adds power and accuracy at the same time.  Any adjustment will take practice to master.

Other ways to get more speed take muscle, but not necessarily in your arm swing.  You can use your legs muscles, more speed on the approach, more speed on the ball.   You can use your torso; open up your shoulders on the backswing.

Again, both of these add speed/power at the sacrifice of stability/control.

PS. If you do find the magic power+accuracy fix, let me know

my drill is perfect right now it is 1/8 left and 1/4 reverse, i do NOT pinch the ball at all (pinch=squeezing). The thing is when i do have a taller arm swing it seems to change my roll and i miss more often, thus i dont like it. I will defenitly have to practice working on my pushaway. ALTHOUGH if you have any more advise please give it to me, can never know to much

If holding it higher or taking longer steps are out of the question AND your pitches and spans are correct for you, then MUSCLE it is. There are no "other" magic formulas (Of course, if someone can teach me something new, I'm always open).

One "muscle"-type trick is to push the ball with your open hand as your ball completes about half the down swing motion. So from the top of your back swing to your release point is the full length of the downswing. About half way through this part is when you might consider this push. Push with your hand/forearm, NOT your shoulder or your upper arm/tricep. I think I got this from Rolf Gauger in Bowling This Month a long time ago.

Do not pull it higher with your shoulder muscles, if you can at all avoid it.
