41' Montreal Pattern- Any Advice???
« on: December 11, 2014, 12:57:29 PM »
Going to be bowling on it this weekend.  6 game block on synthetic lanes.  Some stats- Power tweener, but can crank or down and in if I have to.  17.5-18.5mph Balls in the bag are VG (pin up), Anarchy (pin up), IQ Tour (pin up), Reign On (pin in ring), Tropical Heat Hybrid (pin in ring), Natural (pin up).  (all at box finish) What should I expect?  Any thoughts or tendencies you have seen if you've bowled on it would be helpful.  Thanks in advance.

montreal is a pretty straightforward medium pattern. definitely use the IQ tour solid as your benchmark.i would target 4-5-6 downlane and adjust angles from there. if you need something stronger go with the VG, if you ned more punch downlane look at the reign on. save the anarchy for transition when you need to move into the center of the pattern  and open your angles.  lane topography may alter your game plan as well as other players, especially on the right side of the lane. if everyone else is inside of you be prepared to make a big move to the inside of them when the time comes.

Awesome.  Thanks for the tips.  I generally use the IQ as benchmark and move.  I was thinking along the lines you mentioned but love the affirmation.  I listened to a Chris Barnes interview on the pattern and he said around to play around 10 so I was worried it would be tighter than you had suggested. We shall see.  Thanks again

as long as you have a respectable rev rate and are speed/revs matched you should be fine out by 5. im a little rev dominant (18mph off hand and 400rpm) and am usually outside 5 going more up the back of the ball. i could see you playing 10 at the arrows and 5-6 downlane and be fine. like i said lane topography and traffic in the area will be the defining factors here.

I'm going to start with the plan laid out and like you said, a lot of my moves are going to be based off of who's bowling in front of me.  I have to drill into my own head, "BIG MOVES ARE OK!!" and "DON"T FORCE IT".  I always think I can "make" it work and by the time I do the big jump and find it works, I'm kicking myself.  Thanks again Cheech

Go in with a plan and an idea of how it could play but don't stick to it if it's not working. Take what the lane gives you. Practice is all about reading the lanes and figuring out where your miss room is and what ball gives you the most area. It could either be really tight downlane or outside of 7 could be hooking, depends on the lane surfaces and how the heads hold up. That's the best advice anyone's ever given me regarding tournament play, regardless of what pattern is out there.

Watching righthanders bowl on Montreal on somewhat new synthetics, anything outside of 7-8 at the breakpoint was not hitting the headpin.  I know that for myself as a speed dominant lefty, anything outside of 9 did not work.

Generally speaking, Montreal has a high volume of oil.  I think surface and staying inside of 8 would be a good game plan for most.  I have seen the Chris Barnes video and I will say that the shot generally played like that for the righty on my pair that had a high rev rate and was shooting high scores.  He was using a HyperCell for what it's worth.

I also agree with islesmetfan, have a plan going in but scrap immediately if necessary.

According to more than one book on the mental game, you should only use positive thoughts prior to bowling.  It is said that the subconscience mind does not recognise the word "not" like in "don't" and sees mainly the verb, so your "DON"T FORCE IT" becomes  "Force it".   Better to use a positive thought like "Roll the ball" or "Swing the ball out".

You are absolutely correct and I do catch myself.  Generally when I'm tugging or pulling shots, I get up to the approach and extend my arm a few times reminding myself to let it get out.  Our high school wrestling coach used to have a visualization session before every big match with a psychologist leading us through the process.  It does work.  thanks for catching me MI 2 AZ.
Continued thanks for all the responses.  Been throwing the ball well so far this year so I'm excited. Got cut down to once a week last year by the misses and a my daughter (15 months old now) and it's killing me.  I love time with the family, but miss the lanes greatly!  Finally get to bowl twice in a week this week!
