Ball roll. Am I understanding this correctly?
« on: May 06, 2017, 10:57:27 PM »
I have heard the term "heavy forward roll" before. What does this mean? Also, I have a very high track and have been told to not change my release because, if I do, I will sacrifice roll. I have also heard that high track releases cause a ball to read the lane really early. I tend to fight dry lanes and throw weaker equipment than most. I also do not have a very high Rev rate, but even with my weak equipment, I have a harder time bowling on broken down conditions than most other bowlers. Could this be because my ball reads the dry so early due to my high track?

The actual term heavy roll is kind of a subjective term.  However generally speaking you are correct. All other things being equal a high track will tend to read earlier than a lower track which means more more axis tilt, which promotes early skid.

However, higher track forward roll is preferable if you can generate enough ball speed.  I suspect your difficulty is a combination of high track and lower ball speed

A higher track is preferred when the patterns get tougher, it allows you to keep your angles straighter and keep the ball around the headpin.
As mentioned above, a bit more ballspeed might really help.
Without seeing what you are doing, generally, a little faster feet will help increase ball speed without affecting your timing.
You may also want to adjust your ball surface to higher girts and/or polish to help where the ball reads on the lane

Think of a drag racer getting off of the start line. "Heavy forward roll" is comparable to that. The ball seems to be rolling forward faster than the forward momentum. The more forward roll the better the pin action. Watch some of the high score bowlers, they all have very heavy forward roll when the ball hits the pins. This "roll" keeps the ball from deflecting when it hits the pocket. Even the straight ball bowlers do better when they have "heavy" forward roll. This action is achieved with upward finger lift at release. If you come around the side of the ball, it will spin instead of "roll".

Chris Barnes, Walter Ray come to mind as being able to get the ball to roll forward. They are typically playing straighter up the boards when they do this

There are two things here that are kind of being combined.  There is tilt and axis rotation.  A high track is generally low tilt.  Combined with this if you have low rotation you ball will want to read early.  If you have high rotation your ball will over read everything.  More skid in the oil and over hook in the dry.  As avabob says, you will outhook your rev rate.  Low tilt/high rotation was good in the urethane era, not so much with reactive balls.  Medium tilt and rotation is what you should try to achieve for the best ball reaction most of the time.

It may also help to understand what each ball provides (core-wise).  In theory, asymmetricals will retain tilt better than symmetricals.  My guess is you like asyms more than syms.

Either way, understanding how your release specs affect your roll and what you can control to manipulate said roll on a particular shot is an essential skill.

Thanks for all the input! Do I like asymmetrics better? Yes. Do I ever get to throw them? Not so much lol
