As of today, what's your benchmark ball of choice? (League, tournament, etc)
-
Venom Shock
-
Usually keep my Eternal Cell at 2000 for sport patterns and 3000 for a THS. I'll ball down to my IQTF if I need some more length and some good backend and down to a Hectic if I need even more length.
-
Radical Primo (original) for THS benchmark. I ball up to a DV8 Endless Nightmare if I need something earlier, or ball down to a Radical Torrid Elite if I need something that goes longer.
-
Depending on where I am bowling, either my Melee Hook (pin up) or Ridiculous (pin down)
-
DV8 Deviant solid sanded to 2000 or Radical Ridiculous Asym
-
Wicked Encounter-Pin under
-
Sigma Sting
-
Brunswick Brute Strength. Pin down approx 50 x 4 x 60 @ 3000 surface
-
Pin up Gamebreaker 2 Solid for me.
-
Black Ops at 4000
-
pin up, oob, haywire
-
Night Hawk SE 60*5*65 4000 grit
-
X at OOB
-
X as well, the ball motion is hard to beat.
-
Storm Fight
-
X at OOB
I need one of these in my life.
-
Mine is currently a well-worn Totally Defiant at 2000.
-
sport patterns and tournaments still the IQsolid.
-
IQ Tour Solid for me. The X is definitely intriguing though.
-
I'm still using my Motiv Sigma Sting. Best benchmark ball I've thrown to date.
-
Gamebreaker 2 here.
-
For the lanes I bowl on it's a Track Mx05 or a polished Track Lx05.
-
Current benchmarks:
Light oil houses: Storm Tropical Breeze Hybrid, stock surface.
Medium to Medium-heavy oil houses: 900Global Hook hybrid, 2000 grit dull
-
My trusty pin-up Marvel Pearl...can cover from dry to medium-heavy with a couple Abralon pads and different hand positions. A very versatile benchmark for me.
-
IQ Tour Solid or Original Gamebreaker.
Tried the 900 Global X but it kept shooting past the breakpoint.
-
900 Global X. Slightly milder for me than a typical benchmark but reads the lanes and pattern so consistently that there are no surprises. Drift is looking very good too for a polished hybrid. Need more reps with that to give accurate feedback.
-
Hyroad solid.
Eventually going to get a rocket ship though...
Can't beat the thunder line!
-
High friction center - pin down Break Down at 3k+ polish
Low friction center - pin down Protocol at 2k + polish
-
Most of the time I start with my Lock (polished)
-
Radical Jackpot drilled for midlane roll and continuation, with the polish knocked off. Love this ball so far.
-
Brunswick Vintage Danger Zone OOB...strong, smooth, and predictable.
-
IQ Tour Solid for sport shots and Eternal Cell for house shots. I like more angularity on a more forgiving shot...
-
Is the benchmark ball:
A. The ball you throw first on fresh oil, arch, rolly, control ball?
B. The ball that is a medium reaction (you have earlier arcing ball and later sharper ball?
These 2 are different for me. Not sure everyone has the same definition of benchmark...

I would have to say in my opinion is the ball that you can throw on fresh or maybe it's not fresh but you know what the ball should look like. That reaction being your benchmark for whether it'll work, you need to ball up, or ball down.

For me, a definition IS the thing being described. It is not an opinion.
Unless you're blind, you can call a red rose blue. That is not what "red" is defined to be; it is not an opinion.
A benchmark ball is not necessarily the ball you use in your regular league.
For your release (and a benchmark can vary wildly, depending on your release, speed or rev dominance, and all the usual factors), the benchmark ball is the one that gives your an arc-ing, control type of reaction on medium oil conditions. The benchmark allows yo to judge its reaction on a lane condition that you know nothing about. It's a test ball; so to speak. It helps you define the oil pattern for your release and lets you determine what is the best ball in your arsenal to score well on this unknown oil pattern.
For some people that benchmark could be a Warrior, a Grudge, a Scandal or a Cyclone or a Tropical Storm or anything in between.
If your favorite ball goes 50 feet and makes a left turn on your house pattern, that is not a benchmark ball. It may be your favorite ball, but it sure a heck ain't a benchmark ball.
-
My personal definition of a benchmark:
A ball that I trust and I can read lane conditions with. A ball that I know after throwing what moves need to be made ball wise....That ball and/or motion can be different person to person...
My benchmarks balls over the cpl years:
Nomad Solid
Venom Shock
Black ops no polish....

Just a thought: who actually goes to a tournament using their middle of the road ball to find a look and then adjust from there? Is it poor strategy to waste shots in warm up using your middle of the road ball on fresh oil when the shot hasn't transitioned enough for it to be used?
I personally start with my strongest ball and work my way down until I find the correct read, then use my remaining practice time to figure out how much transition would be needed for my weaker balls to be effective.

This is what I do as well.
