For July, I'm averaging 201.67.  In years past, I was able to keep a relatively solid average despite missing 10 pins and generally not being that great at spares (at least not at the pro level).  Tonight I had 2 opens.  Open 1 was a single 6 pin miss to the left.  Open 2 was the big 4 and I got 2.  But what did I bowl with such amazing non-opening awesomeness? 603.  :(

Probably the hardest 600 series ever.  My spare shooting was extraordinary.  I was making single pin spares all night while also making 5/ and a 6/.  I only had 13 strikes though.  13/36 = 36.1% strike.  That ain't cutting it.  We won the first game and lost the rest and total pins.  One of the bowlers on the other team shot 692 and had a 260 one game.

I think I may have to try urethane or possibly use a very weak reactive ball.  By the 2nd game, I had no oil on the ball at all.  No oil rings, just burnt roughed up rings like I took a thin piece of wood and spun the ball into it haha.

But yeah, back to spare shooting.  I used to try to emulate the pros and throw it all super hard.  But basically anything from the 3 pin and right, I just throw the ball straight and slower than my strike ball (which is easily 20mph+).  It rolls end of end on the finger holes.

But basically, the question is, what do you guys do when there isn't oil?  I basically have just rolled the ball faster by the third game to compensate.  It would be funny if I started to use plastic though but I think my team would think I was not taking things serious.

Thanks guys.  I will look into a Rebel Tank strikeordie or a Pitch Black.

What was the guy doing who shot 690? Was he playing a different part of the lane? Using a different surface? Or was it all throw and pray.

A 20 mph strike ball is plenty of speed and on most house shots there should more than enough oil for resin.

I'm a believer in shooting spares with a normal controlled speed. Most of the bowlers I see throw hard lose their form and accuracy. Plastic is a great spare ball that will go pretty straight especially at 20 mph.

The guy that shot 690+ was basically throwing it over 10 near where I was bowling but had a lot less revs and about the same speed.  Speed is hard to tell.  It doesn't look fast to me and even when I tape myself, it looks about as fast as someone like WRW, if not faster.  If I threw it in the 15-17 mph range, I would have to throw a bigger hook or watch my ball go through the headpin all night long.  Overall, he shot a nice 690 but his average is only in the 190s.

Yeah my spare shooting is getting real good.  Like all my shots the ball covers the entire pin, not just barely hitting it.  This includes the 10 pin which I nail right in the middle of the pin.  I don't do the extreme cross lane stuff either.  I used to and I would see how hard I could throw the ball.  It looks good when I hit the pin, but looks ridiculous when I completely miss.

I basically try to maintain the same target all night long and on anything left of the 3 pin, I just move my feet and hook ball.  From 3 pin to the right, I don't move my feet and just roll it straight with a loose grip to the ball.  Without hook, it just goes in the 3, 9, 6  pin area.  For 10 pins, I move my feet maybe 2 boards just so I can line up with one of the dots on the lane about 10 ft from foul line and roll the ball over that whatever speed it takes for me to nail the target.  If I can keep this up, I will be able to do a lot better in tournaments where oil makes spares a little harder if you hook the ball.

If you are not hitting the pocket regularly then you are probably not playing the correct part of the lane.

If you are hitting the pocket but not carrying then your ball motion is suffering, ball releasing it's energy too early/late, or you have the wrong entry angle.

I'm a believe in watching others who are having success with carry, regardless of their skillset. You have to disregard if they are simply carrying nose dives and cross overs but if they are hitting the pocket and carrying at a higher percentage than you are then they have the correct roll to strike.

See where the break point is and angles. Find a way to get your ball to that point.

That may mean playing a line you don't particularly care for in order to boost your carry percentage.

I would rather play a line that is little harder for me to hit the pocket but my carry percentage goes from 50 to 70%. If you execute you can string some strikes.

Good tips Pinbuster.  I think if it was a tournament format or more than 3 games, I would change.  But I try to keep the same line over a 3 game set for leagues.  One of the guys on the other team switched balls every 6 frames.  He literally used at least 6 different balls over the 3 games.  He also had the lowest series, although he got 7 in a row the last game and beat us.  Not someone I would follow though, because he has such a bad release (ball slides and flips at like 55 ft with almost no revs if that makes sense - like his whole hand comes out of the ball at the same time).
