Quick rule question...
« on: April 20, 2009, 04:10:10 AM »
Is there any USBC rule regarding which lanes are used to make-up a game?

Example...Team A doesn't have enough bowlers for a legal lineup and tells Team B they will make up the game later.  Team B bowls on the scheduled pair of lanes during the league.  This pair is notorious for being much more difficult than the other pairs used in the league...the scores shot on this pair are typically significantly lower than average.  Team A makes-up their missed games the next week, bowling on a different pair of lanes.  Does Team B have legal right to protest the make-up games rolled by Team A since they were not rolled on the same pair as Team B rolled on?

No right to protest.  Pre and post bowls if allowed by the league rules can be contested on any available pair that the house has.

The only complaint you may have is why the other team is deciding to make up the games.  If you don't have a legal line-up by some predetermined time, you forfeit the game unless an emergency situation arises.  Just because you don't have a legal line-up doesn't mean you automatically qualify for a post-bowl situation.  Most often though, no one will argue this point because you would want the same opportunity provided to you in the same situation.

Just to make it clear, here is an example:

League starts practice at 6:20 and competition starts at 6:30.  When 6:30 comes around, Team A needs 3 of 5 members present to make a legal line-up but only has 2.  Team A must have a legal line-up before the end of the 4th frame or will have to forfeit the game.  The members of Team A present say the other members are either going to not make it that night or are simply "running late" and will be there shortly.  Team B can either bowl slow, wait for the other members or just bowl as usual and if the members make it in time, fine.  However, the Team A members that are present say they will post bowl so they don't have to forfeit.  They may realize enough members to make a legal line-up will not be there in time to bowl the first game.  After they say they will post bowl, they may call everyone who may have been enroute and pass the word.  I am not saying this is wrong, but I have been bitten by the post bowl/emergency situation rule before.  Most league rules state that post/pre bowls are for emergencies only.

Our league does not have a prebowl or post bowl only in emergency clause nor do any of the other leagues in the area I bowl.  When you pre or post bowl in our house you are at the mercy of what lanes are available and more than likely you will be bowling on burnt up dry, dry, dry lanes.  So we will usually bowl one short vs having to make up.

This is the statement that would raise a red flag to me.

According to USBC rules (109b.) "When one or both teams scheduled against each other fail to present a lminimum legal lineup and a postponement was not requested, the game(s) is (are) forfeited unless an emergency existed..."

Teams can't just decide as the game starts and they don't have a legal line-up to post bowl.

We require a 48 hour notice unless an emergency for all post and pre bowls.  Lanes are run if properly scheduled.  This cuts down on the oh I think we'll post bowls.

Fortunately, this became a non-issue as both teams involved fell out of contention for winning the quarter...still glad to find out what the rules were on this though. Thanks.
