Title: Dexter shoe question
Post by: mike300 on December 14, 2020, 09:29:47 AM
Hey guys, I have a question on the heels for The 9's.  I just bought a pair of The 9's to replace my SST 8's and was told they both use the same sized heels.  I was hoping to be able to put my favorite heel on the new shoes as I hate breaking in new heels but it's about an inch wider so it hangs over the edges of the shoes.  I've looked around the internet and can't find a definitive answer if the heels for the 9's come narrower or if you're just supposed to cut down the heels to fit.  I don't want to order a new heel only to have to cut it down anyways as I have a few heels from the SST 8's already.

I believe they are trim to fit.  If your order a new heel, it would need to be trimmed.

That's what I was figuring.  It does seem odd though that they wouldn't make the correct sized heel for their "best" shoe.

Dexters website does say the heels are designed to fit any existing interchangeable heel Dexters which they clearly don't.  I can make my old heel work by either cutting it down to fit or having the overhanging part towards the outside of the shoe so I don't step on it.

If anyone has experience cutting the heel to fit, what did you cut it with?  Seems too thick for a normal pair of scissors and I don't want to destroy my old heel until I'm comfortable with The 9's.

I hate getting new shoes and it takes me a bit to get comfortable and get them broken in, only reason I switched is because my toe sticks through the front of my SST 8's after about 10 years of using the same pair.

I use normal scissors to trim heels for my Dexters.  The edges may not be perfectly smooth after hacking it with scissors, but it is safer than having the heel stick out too far from the edges and possibly catch on something.

If I recall, the replacement heels and soles are designed to fit up to a size 15 shoe.  So anyone wearing less than a 15 will need to do some trimming to get them to sit flush with the edge of their shoes.  When Dexter uses the term "fit", I believe they are using that to mean "will attach to", not necessarily be perfectly aligned to the edges without trimming.

Don't expect to get 10 years out of the "9"'s.  A family member bought a pair, and the bottom of the shoe started cracking after less than 2 years.  Emailed Dexter, and they freely told me that the "9"'s are not designed to be durable.  They are designed for comfort and performance, but not durability.  They wouldn't cover them under any kind of warranty as they deemed the cracking/splitting on the bottom to be normal wear and tear.

I appreciate the info, I'm going to try and get comfortable with the sawtooth heel they came with but if I don't like it, I'll start hacking away on the old heel  ;D

I’ve been told the best way is scissors for the rough cut then smooth it down with a belt sander or table top grinning wheel.

I just used the grinder as it only needed a small amount removed. Just take your time.

Man, this entire thread makes Dexter look bad. The bowling industry needs fresh blood in the shoe sector.

If Dexter could find a way to sell replacement soles and heels pre-cut to fit each shoe size they sell, it would be more convenient for the customer.  Of course, their sku count would increase exponentially but since they are already cutting the soles and heels to fit brand new "in the box" shoes, they must have the ability to do it.

I wouldn't even mind ordering the replacements direct from Dexter in multiples if they could keep the price similar to other sources.  The could even just ship them in a padded envelope as well.  Would save on packaging.  Dexter coould just have the sized soles/heels separated in their warehouse in plastic bins, pull the part needed for the order, put it in a padded envelope, and ship it out.

Totally agree, buy $200 shoes and then grind down parts to make them fit, it's actually laughable.  The only reason I went with The 9's was so I could continue using my old heels.  Oh well, sounds like they won't last very long anyways and I can go in a different direction next time...lol

On a good note, they are pretty comfortable when I put them on.  ;D

LOL, beats me! In web page terms, it shows there is a directory on the server with that odd name. No idea why it would be named that.

A hack would look a lot different.

I think they got lazy and used a directory structure from elsewhere(instead of building their own) and just stuck it on their site. As long as the post had a correct path for the link, it doesn't really matter what the actual directory name is assigned.

The web master probably maintains multiple websites and grabbed something from another site tree.

Shoe update (in case anyone cares):

I finally tried out the 9's in a practice session with the sawtooth heel that comes with the shoe and it actually felt pretty good, slipped just a bit 2 times over the course of 3 games but nothing too bad.  So knowing I can use this heel I decided to cut my favorite heel to fit these shoes because if I ruined it, it wouldn't be that big of a deal.  Surprised to say the cutting went well and I sanded down all the cut edges with 80 grit to smooth it out and it looks ok.  Now I just need to test out the old heel after cutting to make sure the new edges don't create footing issues.

Even though this didn't turn out to be as big of a deal as I thought it might, I still think it's horrible of Dexter to require people to cut their own heels to fit their "best" shoe.

BTW, when taking off the heel that came with the shoe, it said 10M on the felt side so Dexter must have bins of these precut to put on the new shoes going out, no reason they can't sell the correct sized heels to their customers.
