My mom used to work at a few centers in the late 60's and early 70's. My father and brother bowled in tourneys all over the place, and I was thinking of some of the centers from glory days past that have closed. Here is a list of some of the ones I remember:
Hart Bowl
Circle Bowl
Jack and Jill Lanes
Expressway Lanes
Zangs
Bronco Bowl
Don Carters East
Buckner Bowl or Grove Country (I think this one is closed)
Meadowbrook Lanes (I think this one is closed too)
Cotton Bowling Palace
See if anyone can think of some more.

Its sad to think, but add Don Carter'w All Star Lanes to that list of closed centers if the college thats bidding on the place gets it.

If they only made a ball that would carry that da_n 7 pin (and I am right handed!!)

Jim,
It is my understanding that there is a new set of investors looking to keep Don Carters West open.

I live about 80 miles away, but I know Grove country is closed. I drive by there twice a week on my route. I miss that place. Bowled a few touneys there, house had china for a shot.

I spoke to someone last week and they told me things are still very much up in the air if DC will be staying open or not. They have lost alot of league bowlers and all of their traveling league teams.

Jim,
I know that the conditions were horrible for State. No air conditioning and the snack bar had hardly any food at all.

Valwood
Preston Forest
Irving Lanes
Town North
Great Southwest
Carter Beach
Richland
Forest Park
Berry Bowl
I lived at Hart and Circle!
A couple Mid Cities and FW one. Bronco was cool but Forest Park was the most unique. It was over a big pancake house.

If I remember correctly, didn't Berry bowl have a tournament that ran on sundays only. I seem to recall a center in Ft. Worth or surrounding area that used to really pull in some big names at the time and I thought it was Berry.

I knew there was some reason I spent every Sunday at Berry as a kid. lol

I believe that place is long gone. There used to be a center in Irving called Golden Triangle but I think it has changed it's name. Help me out here Robert.

Last I heard it changed names....FWIW...it was off central expressway, near a bowling and billards.

The one in Richardson is now AMF Richardson. I used to buy cameras from Bob Tomlinson in the pro shop there. It was a weird combination of things. Like to find him again. Triangle Bowl in Irving is still there as AMF Irving under new management. That is the center where our Pro Shop is located. Someone told me that Blazer is gone. That one was close to the B&B that is on Easy St. The B&B is now split in the warehouse. One side is Classic Products and the other something else.

Of the gone and somewhat fondly remembered, I did well at DC Beach and at Grove Country. Hart was a house I always seemed to struggle in...so I'm not sure I want to put it in a fondly remembered category

Grove Country was a Ray Charles shot before the concept of the THS was so widely abused...the thing that amazed me was how many people were whining about how flooded they were. I also remember it as the first place I bowled where you had to have the bar membership since it was in a liquor-controlled area. Manager comped the membership since I was from out of town...
It would be a shame to see DC West go...they always put on a good tournament. Granted, the stuff that Jim would run could get hellish hot during September and October on the low end of the house if the AC was even thinking about going on the fritz...
-
The ac on the high end of DC West is terrible. When you start league at 6 the air is on and then they decide it is getting cold outside. Boom the vents are directly above the back of the approaches and they come on like afterburners.
I made the mistake of calling DC West the coldest bowling alley I had ever been in. I thought Susie Minshew was going to slap me silly.

I hate Cowtown Not only is it in a dump area, it is one of the most distusting places I've ever bowled at. Hurst is dumpy too but it just needs a renovation. Spare Time sucks too.
-
Isn't Grove Country basically wear bumper bowling started. I remember hearing a story where Kinser started putting some type of floatation devices filled with air in the gutters.

Add Wedgewood to the list. I remember my Dad talking a lot about Richland and Forest Park.
There were a couple more in Mineral Wells that shut down back in the day. There was a 12 lane alley at Fort Wolters military base that shut down when the base did, and there were at least 2 lanes in the basement of the Baker Hotel which has been shut down for a long while.

-Corey
I'm not even supposed to be here today...
When your arrows come up, good luck and good bowling.
-
That's what I understand. Kinser is the father of bumper bowling.
