Title: Did your league cancel the season?
Post by: johns811 on March 30, 2020, 10:13:36 AM
Ohio is in shut down mode. Where I bowl many leagues are cancelling the season (about 5-6 weeks left). I haven't heard on my Sunday trio league which is my only league but I would be fine finishing during the summer but I doubt we will.

What are your leagues doing?

My sport league deferred a decision until we know when the lanes could re-open.

when things closed in my area it was originally until April 1st.  it wont reopen then as things have only gotten worse in regards to COVID-19

Many other leagues in my area did just cancel the remainder of their seasons.

I’m in Ohio as well. So far - on hold. With the new guidelines of social distancing through at least April 30 - and probably longer - I would assume most leagues will cancel the rest of the season. I hope not but we shall see.

I’m expecting an email at any moment calling the rest of season.

I'm sure my Wednesday and Friday leagues will.  It's not official yet but why the hell wouldn't they just do it now and distribute $?

I do hope the summer sport trios league will go.  I do enjoy that league......but we're kinda slave to the whole situation.

Maybe they don’t have all the money? I don’t mean theft, I mean some teams like my team pay out the league in full months in advance. I know some guys who pay by the week up
Until the last week. Pretty easy to make an error handling cash in a situation like that.

The house still shows a "tentative" reopen date of April 1st. We had 6 weeks left when the doors closed.

Ironically, the house has a redesigned website this morning, but the same info for covid-19.

With my current workload and classes, I'm all for ending the season as we stand now. I'm also expecting to hear from USBC that the Open Championships are cancelled, although I wonder how well they will weather the loss of income the tournament brings in each year. Perhaps Chad will take a pay cut...probably not.

Both leagues are split into halves, so I'd assume each would pay out the first half accordingly.

For the second half.........I would assume refund 100% for everyone that paid out for weeks not bowled, then just payout a prorated amount based on current standings?

My Friday league actually has..........wait for it.........outside sponsors that have contributed to our prize fund.  Owner/league secretary does a GREAT job (have to give credit where it's due).

I have thought about that one as well. I'm in two leagues and have paid both in full already. But I know several bowlers who were behind when it shut down. For us, it's not even team by team, but bowler by bowler. I paid three weeks for one of my teammates and he was still behind.

Off handed question, but valid; If any of you had to guess, what percentage of you, think the stimulus package, will HELP these owners of the bowling alleys? (The maximum amount given to them?).

Our sport league is just on hold at the moment. Potential options of finishing last 7 weeks or going straight into playoffs when we can start back up.

Hope seems to be beginning of May for most things to open back up

I can’t answer that, Bowlero seems to own everything, there’s maybe 2 non corporate centers. One I’m certain will drown, they were hemorrhaging money before this.

No word yet on our center.  We were originally to have been out of the shelter in place order today.  Then last Monday it was extended to April 6th.  Now with the president extending social distancing guidelines to April 30th, I imagine the bowling center will be closed until at least April 30th at this point.  There were still 6 weeks remaining in my league when the stoppage happened.

If they decide to resume the leagues in May, we will potentially be bowling until mid/late June.

My house---Montvale Lanes---is in Bergen County, NJ---one of the pandemic Ground Zeroes across the USA. We have not received a closure notice of any kind, but we do not need one. Our league bowling is finished until September---if we are lucky. I hope that Montvale Lanes will survive.

One of my leagues had a vote already and decided by a 2:1 margin to end the league now. I think if there were a definite return date the vote would have gone differently. Most people said they would support the center in the summer if we're able to bowl by then.

I haven't heard anything official yet but I have to imagine that my winter league is done. It's now a matter of sorting out payments or credits towards next season. Some folks pay week to week and others pay the entire season in advance so that will all have to be figured out.
Regardless, I've pretty much checked out at this point and don't see myself bowling until September at the earliest.

Our big Tuesday night mens league cancelled 2 weeks ago with 3 or 4 weeks left. I'm certain the Wednesday night mixed league is also done, though no official word has come yet. The Thursday night had 7 weeks left when this all started and we were holding out hope to bowl the last 4 nights, but with President Trump announcing yesterday another 4 weeks on the 6 foot distance rule, I'm certain that will kill any chance of that happening. I'll be curious to see if there will be any summer leagues, as most of those were scheduled to start late April or early May. Just today local government officials were speculating that the peek will happen mid April to mid May. I bowl at Expo Bowl in Indianapolis. Stay well to all.

Just received notice, my leagues are done.

On a good note, in our challenge league, we took first place. Won two quarters and total points. On a not so good note, in the other league, well, I will just say we DID NOT take first place.  ;D

One of my two leagues has, the other one we are going to have a meeting, well were going to as soon as we could get the captains in a room with the owner of the center but that would be too many people. They are working to get a conference call set up to discuss options, but we all pretty much know it's going to be cancelled.

Summer leagues are going to be interesting, depending on how much longer this stretches out. Just really hoping my two local centers can weather this storm, both are nice, but small, local private owned centers.

We only had 1 week remaining in our challenge league (sweeper/roll off night) and had already paid for that week so we decided to cancel the final night. Because we had already paid, it made the decision easy as it didn't cost the house any lineage.  We haven't received our league payout yet but I would hope nobody would ask for the refund on the lineage for the final week and at least let the house keep that.  I bowl at a privately owned center that was also hosting women's state so they are going to take a big hit financially.

They postponed our Thursday and Saturday leagues two weeks ago. No word on when they will be open or if they will have each league vote on whether to finish or not.  If  we would vote to end the leagues we had 6 more weeks left in both leagues. i would be ok with finishing later to help the center as they are currently shut down.

We had 3 weeks left so we put everything on hold for 30 days with the hope of finishing.  We'll re-evaluate after the 30 days, but if the quarantine is extended I'd imagine we'll have to cancel.

I haven't heard anything about our leagues only assume we are done.  Our local center was suppose to close for six weeks for renovations starting Memorial Day, on upside they have started the work early in hopes of salvaging some summer league activity, can only hope we are all back to normal by then.

Slightly offtopic, but drawing the correlation.

Seeing that they just called off Wimbledon this year in the UK, which is a first that I can ever remember (it may have been called off in WW1 or WW2), should the USTA decide to call off the US Open, that may speak volumes as to how the beginning of next year's bowling season will go. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a delayed start to next year, let alone any tour stops. While the women are unfortunately used to this from having that 10+ year drought from the PWBA folding in 2003, the only time I've ever seen the men's tour stopped for anything was for the bomb threat that was called in at the bowling alley while the finals were being aired live.

Again, if what's going on in the tennis world is any indication, the USBC, PBA, PWBA, TeamUSA, and WTBA have a lot to think about.

Agree. I'm surprised the USBC hasn't just canned this year's tournament already. My group rescheduled, but shortly after that the OC got pushed from May 1 to May 23rd.

I know it's a lot of lost $$, but the right thing to do is just cancel it and move it to next year.  Too much travel uncertainty for all of us.

I'm waiting for nationals (open and women's) to be cancelled as well.

I've got a feeling that the national tournaments supply a good chunk of the USBC operating income each year. I'm not sure they can stand a hit that large.

think about it this way.. Should those who tried out for TeamUSA and made it have to re-try out because they weren't able to make it to any tournaments for this? For example, QubicaAMF World Cup? Should that get cancelled this year, should those that won the Trials have to try out again? they would have been screwed out of their spot for this, through no fault of their own, TeamUSA's own, WTBA's own, and AMF's own..

Sometimes life isn't fair. Ask the NCAA basketball teams who were going to make the field of 64. Or USA Summer Olympic athletes from 1980.

So yep, next year is another season. The best at that time should have to prove themselves to be so.

Yesterday, our Governor extended stay at home orders to the whole state until 4/30, but at the same time closed all non-essential businesses "indefinitely".  So even if we are "released" on 4/30 [which is highly unlikely], businesses like the bowling center are in limbo until told otherwise.  The Governor basically said he would give non-essential businesses 48-hours notice for when they could reopen in the future, to give them time to clean, restock, notify/schedule staff, etc.  How kind of him.

I bowl in Ohio also.  I have a feeling the 2 leagues I am in will vote to end or continue once the stay at home order is lifted.

I say end them now and hand out the prize fund...... see you in the fall.  ITS GOLF SEASON.

Even for the Olympics, it is assumed there will be additional try-outs for 2021.  It is unfortunate, but it is what it is.
