differences in ball drillers
« on: November 04, 2003, 09:13:24 PM »
Over the past 15 years I have used 4 different ball drillers.  I only switched drillers due to the driller leaving the business (one bought the bowling center he was in and stopped drilling, one moved, etc.)  One observation I had is the equipment I liked the most, and scored the best with, was drilled by the driller whose bowling style was the most like my bowling style.

My question is was this a coincidence or is there something to it?  If it isn't a coincidence is it because the driller understands better what equipment/layout works best for our style?  If that is the case, should I look for a driller whose style matches mine?

Has anybody else had this experience?

With a profile like yours I'd have thought you only need the drillers to punch holes in the balls for you.

In my area drillers tend to drill balls depending on the bowler's average if the bowler does not know what they want the ball to do. Otherwise they'll drill as requested with some discussions of their style and house they bowl in.

I think it helps having someone drill for you who happens to throw similar to you helps as well. The knowledge of the driller is the big thing though. In the past 4 years I have had 3 people drill my equipment for me. Each one did a good job. The one that I have been using now has taken time to map everything out for me and worked to get the ball laid out to be the best for what I wanted the ball to do. He also has done a few adjustments for me to try with pitches and span that I don't think anybody else would have done. Drilling for averages I think does happen however I think the pro shop's try to do the best job to drill for that person. Yeah there are generic drill patterns out that would be placed on the ball for some people. I do believe that finding somebody that can drill your ball and you be happy with it and be comfortable with it and know what the ball will do is the KEY.

Where I am, there are 2 guys who do the drilling in my local shop. I have had equipment drilled by both of them. One of them plays the lanes as I do, except he is lefty and the other guy is more of a cranker. What I noticed is that the cranker drills equipment for people based on what he thinks. He is a big fan of lenthening the span a bit to grip more on the fingers and get more lift. The other guy, who plays like me only from the wrongside, is the guy I go to all the time now. He knows my game but also says that the span shouldnt be lengthened, after he drilled me a couple of balls I found out why. Shortened up my span by almost 1/4" and it is the most comfortable feel when I pick up a ball. He is also my coach so I guess that is a benefit too!!

There are drillers and a pro that can fit, layout and drill!  Big difference.
