We had our first night last night, and a friend of mine bowled in their first night. She said she'd never seen as many 120 games in one place, but they have 3 guys averaging over 220.

I don't know how many guys did well last night in our league, but one of my teammates who booked 218 averaged 142 last night. We bowled Chet Roger's team (NW region exemption winner for 2008-09 season) and he averaged 225. He was disappointed in his performance.

Yes - these guys really ARE that good. Makes the rest of us look like the hacks we really are!

The one thing about pba shots is if you have never bowled on them you really have no idea where to play at so you start lost and finish lost since you dont have much practice time before you start. They really ought to give you at least 20min practice so you have a chance to get lined up correctly and find the right ball. Thats why you get 2 hours the day before on the pba tour. But yes there are alot of hacks. I consider myself a good bowler I averaged over 220 in every league and 230 in some and will probably only end up at just at deuce on pba experience. The main thing that kills all your 220 guys is most dont go straight at spares. So this miss a ton. All your seasoned guys know that you have to have a consistent release and also go straight at spares. Some people think they have to turn it as hard as they can and are all over the place

I know that one of the centers I bowl at will put the shot out on a few lanes about a week before the league starts. That would give the bowlers a chance to bowl on it and get some practice before the league actually starts.

The thing our center did this year was quite helpful.  They put out all of the patterns on 10 lanes last week and gave us unlimited practice on them.  Also, they brought in Brad Angelo to give us a classroom instruction for about an hour then come out to the lanes with us and go over the patterns and how to best break them down and play them.  We took a walk down to the end of the lanes and saw the transition areas both before we bowled and after about an hour and it is amazing to visually see what is going on down lane.  It was a big help for those of us that chose to do this.  I spent aobut 5 hours last week and I shot 654 on Cheetah and my team mate shot 684.  It also gave us a game plan for each pattern so when we change patterns we wont be as lost.  Hurray for Brunswick.  I really appriciate my center manager for getting this done.

Mumzie,

Don't forget that (at least) 2 factors are involved here.

1. People used to bowling on house shots are not used to seeing where their balls hit at the breakpoint so they have no idea how accurate they are. The house shot forgives targetting errors PBA patterns do not.  While the PBA-type of bowler is used to being accurate, they also realize emotionally that missed shots will NOT strike. House hacks do not realize that and expect strikes whenever the ball doesn't go into the gutter.

2. PBA players also have balls prepared for these patterns. You need one or two balls with 2" pin to PAP and you need one or two balls with 5.5" - 6" pin to PAP. You need control balls or you need releases to attack these patterns. House hacks' egos need to see the ball hook out of the house. PBA patterns almost cannot use such balls.

Wow our center wont let you bowl on these patterns at all until league starts. They oil them about an hour in advance but wont let you bowl a warm up game or anything. Now what I usually do is bowl my set for league then stay after to figure the pattern out then come back again the next day because they dont reoil for about 3 days after the league. So by the 2nd week I am pretty lined up and know where to play and what ball to use.

For my Thursday night league, the center puts down the PBA pattern of the week all day Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday on several lanes.  The downfall is bowling at 9pm on a PBA pattern oiled at 11am...  This does allow you to practice and pre-bowl or post-bowl.  (Very nice since it's a singles league)

The guy who won the last 2 years in our tough shot league holds a 225+ in THS and won each year with a 195 first year and a 197 last year.

What I am now seeing, since people are seeing more and more of these PBAX leagues, in my area they had a couple this past winter, is people are getting used to these.  You can tell who has bowled on these patterns before and who hasn't right away by what part of the lane they are playing and how frustrated they are getting.  The last clue is when the guy says "this pattern is not that hard" after throwing a turkey then throws a reverse turkey by having 3 spilts immediatly after the 3 strikes.
