Does SIZE Matter in Bowling?
« on: May 10, 2003, 04:50:46 PM »
I mean, how large the bowler is? It seems to me that the larger folks tend to throw harder, crank it more etc. but do they SCORE higher? Can they bowl a 10 game block easier? Or is bowling skill primarily related to proper execution and stamina, regardless of one's size? I bowled in a doubles tournament yesterday which had a mix of guys in it, but the large guys didn't win, us small strokers did! Does size matter?

I definetly don't think size matters. You say bigger people throw harder and i don't necessarily find this true. I'm only about 5'7" and i can throw 20+mph if need be. Also, size doen't affect one's style. There are short crankers and tall strokers. And, about endurance, endurance is endurance no matter how big you are, will bigger people be able to throw harders longer? No not necessirly. There are some smaller people that are strong and able to do this pepeatedly. So, to answer your question, no size does not matter in bowling in my opinion.

I have always touted that size doesn't matter.

You all sound like you are justifying your lack of size.  The women in your lives must be telling you that size doesn't matter.  Michelle says that size does matter, but she seems to like them small.  You all should meet up somewhere.  At least you'll have something in common.

Hmmm... The size of one's mouth could get one into trouble in bowling.

As far as physical size being a factor in the ability of one to score well, the answer is definitely "NO".  As Michelle pointed out, Norm Duke is a prime example, as is Pete Weber.  Yet another good example of a bowler that you will likely hear more about is Tiffany Stanbrough.....she might be small in size, but she can really crank it up from the LEFT side!

There is one lady (about age 26) who bowls in my house that is relatively small, yet she holds the women's state record for 700+ series with well over 170 of them so far.  I know that between scratch leagues and my match point league, she's slapped me around with several 700's.

It's not about size.....it's more about technique, talent, and execution.

The number 1 factor in bowling leverage and power regardless of size is how close is the ball to your ankle at release!

Average can almost be determined by this statistic in my opinion.

We have a guy in our house that is Wichita State alum, about 5'5".
This guy can amp it up!

In a sense I think it could matter.  A larger more muscular person can bowl a lot longer and maintain much better than a smaller weaker person.

There are exceptions to this I am sure just like there is with everything, but in the long run I would say being larger, stronger and things of this nature do benefit you.
