Drier Lane Balls Still Hook Too Much?
« on: June 02, 2003, 07:56:58 PM »
I was just wondering how many people out there find that the balls for drier conditions still hook too much.

Are balls like the Too Hot, Sonic X, Beast, Wild, Stinger Log Flare still too strong?  Do people find pancake balls like the Scout and Flame may go long enough, but don't hit hard enough?

Is there a need for something that goes real long that still hits?

From my own experiences and from what I have seen/heard from others are most all of the "dry lane balls" hook a ton more than what the person wanted.  If you put any hand in the ball at all, the ball just hooks.  I find that moving left (RH bowler) speeding up, throwing harder, and changing my release help a lot more than changing balls.  But when I do need to change, I just pull out the trusty Gold Angle.  I don't see a need for spending money on a ball I know is going to hook more than what I need.

Any ideas about the Track Magic?  Thinking about picking it up before the July tournaments here in Las Vegas.

Part of it is learning to play the right line on drier lanes, and this is something that I still struggle with.  Often times, lanes that we see as dry, really are mostly dry in the track, far outsides and backends.  Sometimes there is still quite a bit of oil in the middle of the lane, and if you can play more of a deep inside line, without swinging the ball, and keeping it in as much oil as possible, you can use a slightly stronger reactive.  Sometimes the lane just doesn't have enough oil on it even for that line.
That being said, I totally agree with you that "dry lane balls" often hook way too much for what the customer wants.  I've gone through the way too many balls, and finally have found the one you may be looking for, and it was mentioned earlier by Ragnar....the Buzzsaw XXXL.  A lot of people are scared of plastic for various reasons....if there's a little carrydown you're going to struggle with it, people are also not used to a plastic hitting like this.  When I throw it on dry lanes, people are shocked that it's a plastic, everyone thinks it's urethane.  And yes, because it's by Lane #1 it's way overpriced.  But if you really want a truly dry lane ball, this is the one to go for.

Wilbert - definitely yes.

Just shot some sets at the ongoing PBC open.  Oiling is reverse block.  Definitely need a long and strong ball.

will be trying 2 of my long and drilled weak balls thurs.

Give me a ring when you get here.

Nevadabowl -  The Track Magic looks like a Track version of Columbia's Beast.

Ambi1 - I will bring my dry lane ball instead of my medium condition ball for the PBC Open.

Wilbert - i made a booboo.  reverse Xmas tree, 33 feet. middle part of lane about 50 units of oil.  Bring a long strong pearl/solid and one for dry.  Moderate carrydown during 2nd and 3rd squads.  best line so far I've seen is tightline swing to about 11-7th for the breakpoint.

see you soon.

Take your hand out of the ball.......... flatten your wrist out and DON'T hit the ball. My first week of summer sport league had very very short oil so short that with my wrist cupped my XXXL polished was hooking to the wrongside. They told us that it would be the same for the next week so I took my blueberry and my XXXL only. I had a thought in practice and flattened my wrist out and opened my hand instead of hitting the ball. it was like magic... I was closer to the pocket the second night than I was the first night with the XXXL, and a blue dot...same conditions.....

:::to babz:  I have a Flame Orange and it is sanded 1200..with Elixer on it and it does not hit like a truck but it does not carry like my old Target Zone either.... if there is enough dry on the back and you can control the jump when it hits the dry it will carry fairly well..

I have noticed the same thing. If i put negative weight on a very weak ball... it becomes TOO weak... Then you drill it strong, it goes too strong. Label sometimes is iffy. What I do is get a medium light lane condition ball... like the Pearl Savage, Tiger, Silver Streak Pearl, Original Eraser, Monster Frenzy, and the like... and end up putting the negative drill on it. That works for me... I don't know about anybody else, but I thought I'd pass along some info.

The Storm Orange Reactive Flame is a great light oil ball. I never touched the surface of the one I had. I should have tried it polished to 5000 with Diamond Gloss.
Currently I am trying something else. An AMF Kick drilled negative. I will give a report on it once I try it out.

However, if you are dealing with dry lanes, a weak ball should still not be too weak. Square up to the lane more if you have to. If you are switching to a weaker ball and still trying to send the ball across alot of boards, then you are playing the lane wrong.

On dry lanes I use a Flame drilled with a label drill. With these drier lane balls you have to remember to tame down the drilling or else they are useless. Sometimes another good drilling is to put the pin below the ring finger. Gives it alot more control
