i found this mill jig on sears.com..... do you think this could be made to work for ball drilling???

Does your existing drill press have enough quill travel for the mill table, a bowling jig, and installation and removal of the ball AND drill bits? Most presses do not, however some do. You need to research this. If you are interested in a drilling setup strictly for personal use, a better option might be a Rudell style jig.

how much travel do you think you would need on a drill press??

You will need 3-3 1/2 inches of travel. You need a press that after you install that mill table and a jig for the ball allows you 6 3/4 inches of room for the ball and then another 6 inches or so for room to insert/remove bits.
If the table will lower to allow for all of this space then you should be in business. One other thing to pay attention to is how the jig might mount to the table. This is very important.

Isn't the ball diameter 8.5"? In which case I'd have thought you'd need at least 7-7.5 inches of clearance (allowing for an inch or so of overlap between the jig and the ball)

It is ideal to be able to remove bits without removing the ball. For that you need a little more clearance.

Still, more than 6 3/4" though

Sure, you could make that work, why not? On a basic x-y jig, it's basically just a table that moves left/right and back/forth.
Just find something that can hold and secure the ball. Figure out how to zero it out with a bit, and then go for it. The only problem I could see would be if the measurements are off. Since that jig is designed for flat pieces and a bowling ball is a sphere, I don't know if moving 1/4" would equate to the same.
Really how is that jig any different than these?:

Figure out how to clamp the ball down and give it a shot. If you have the tools and can find some material, it shouldn't be too hard to make something like this: http://www.bowlingindex.com/store/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=BI&Category_Code=PST&Product_Code=PS-SJig

I haven't measured the exact gap, but I'm pretty sure I only have slightly more than 6 inches between the ball and chuck.
Drill bits are right around 6.5" long, with an inch of that going into the chuck, and I have just over 1/2" between the tip of the bit and the ball - enough to fully open the chuck and angle a bit in.
If it matters, I'm using an old K-mart drilling setup.
PS: when did Sear's site become so bad? They don't even give you dimensions or weights for the products. I looked at a couple of drill presses and they don't even give you any specs - most don't even list the spindle/quill stroke (travel).

Yes you are correct AB...brain fart. Diameter is around 9".
Can't exactly explain how that one slipped out????

Hey,pin-smasher,here's my set up that I put together a couple of weeks ago.
Mill table:http://www.grizzly.com/products/6-x-18-1-2-Compound-Slide-Table/G8750
Drill press:http://www.lowes.com/pd_78742-46069-PCB660DP_0_?productId=3162489&Ntt=drill press&Ntk=i_products&Ns=p_product_price|1&pl=1¤tURL=/pl__0__s?newSearch=true$Ntt=drill press$y=8$x=17
Ball jig:http://cgi.ebay.com/KMT-PERSONAL-BALL-JIG_W0QQitemZ140407862403QQihZ004QQcategoryZ310QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp4340.m444QQ_trkparmsZalgo%3DCRX%26its%3DC%252BS%26itu%3DSI%252BUA%252BLM%252BLA%26otn%3D1%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D7953511844348801999
Everything works great.Granted, I have to remove the ball to change drill bits. But for drilling your own stuff at home,it works great.

i was thinking of using that compound table and using this item
http://www.shop.innovativebowling.com/product.sc?productId=22&categoryId=12
and mounting it to compound table
-
At $150? I wouldn't do it. Just buy a used jig. You can usually find a used one on Ebay now and then for $300 or so.

That will work, but you still need something for the ball to sit on,and then clamp it to the mill table.A 12"x12"x 1/2: aluminum plate with a hole in the center of it would do the job.

I spent everyday for 5 weeks trying to find a ball jig on Ebay.If you want to go that route, good luck.

whats the smallest drill press you think would work,8",10",12",15" ????

15".One of the reasons I chose a floor model drill press,is to acommadate the height of the mill table, ball and jig. Most of the less expensive table top models of drill presses can't accomplish that.

so a delta 12" drill press would not work?
-
I looked at both the Delta DP300 and DP350,and
no,they don't havr enough height.
