Just wanted your opinion on drilling a ball through the pin and the affect it will have on the ball.. Should it be done or avoided...
-
My favorite layout has the ring finger drilled into the pin. No idea if that is good or not, but it works well for me.
-
I don't think there is anything "different" about drilling the pin out vs. just placing the pin a certain distance from the PAP. From a dynamics standpoint the pin really is nothing but filler...so by drilling it out you're not changing the core. If you draw backwards from the finger you're drilling out and figure the pin to PAP distance....it may make sense.
Again...nothing magic about it though.

I have a few with pin in ring finger and like reaction i get. Most ball manufactures will still honor warranty as long as pin is completely drilled out. Pin drilled out for me puts put at 4 1/2 from my pap and val angle at approximately 50degrees.

My Ebonite Vital Energy has the pin completely drilled out in the ring finger and that layout works really well with a true skid/snap reaction. It was necessary because the pin would have been way too close to the ring finger and could have caused cracking. If you do drill the pin, make sure it is completely out.

Actually it does not hurt a thing to drill out the pin. I have a couple of balls that have the pin drilled out, one ball has the ring finger drilled out and the other one has the middle finger drilled out. Keep in mind that the pin to PAP distance is what you are looking for first to achieve the ball roll that you desire. The pin to PAP measurement may determine if the pin needs to be drilled out. If either finger hole comes real close to the pin after drilling, it is recommended to drill the pin out to prevent ball from cracking around the pin.

I had the pin drilled out in the RF in a Lane 1 Blue Death which is one of my 2 all time favorite Lane 1 balls.

Sometimes it becomes necessary (to accomplish your desired layout) to drill through the pin. Any other reason would make no sense at all.
In other words, just because your buddy has a ball that way, it doesn't mean you should do it. The two of you might track differently, and even if you do track the same, there may not be two (exactly) identical balls with which to compare.
Is there any advantage, or disadvantage, to doing it? As long as you are achieving your layout objectives then go ahead. But there is nothing "magical" to having the pin drilled out. It simply marks the top of the core.

100% agree

If in your desired layout, one of the holes comes close to the pin, you are better off drilling it out to avoid cracking issues. Cracks often happen between the pin and finger holes.
-
I agree it's no big deal. I have a 607 that way.
-
Agree with cobalt. The only aspect you want to avoid is clipping or half drilling the pin.

My Versa Max was drilled with the pin completely drilled out for the ring finger. My ball driller believes it has no impact on reaction. He does avoid hitting the pin partially due to potential cracking problems. I put a large hole on the axis, and get pretty much the reaction I would expect from a pin down layout with an axis hole.

Your driller is right. It's the pin to PAP distance that affects performance, not whether the pin is drilled out. If a layout places the pin close to a finger hole I modify it to either move it further away or drill it completely out to avoid cracking. -- JohnP
