Title: Dropping a bowling ball off of Sears Tower
Post by: BrianCRX90 on December 09, 2008, 09:48:41 AM: What would happen to a high performance bowling ball if you dropped it off the Sears tower in Chicago off the roof? What kind of sound would it make, would would be left of the ball and what would happen to the sidewalk/street/car/person/whatever the ball happens to land on?

i dont know, now that i think about it i would assume if it had 1/2 pos side and 1 oz of top it would get there faster than if it had 1/2 neg and 1 oz bottom

Post by: Scolai on December 09, 2008, 06:54:59 PM: Using a handy-dandy online calculator, we find that a 15 lb bowling ball has a terminal velocity of about 200.171 ft/sec. It would take approximately 400 meters for the ball to reach that velocity unimpeded by weather (and finger holes). Since the Sears Tower comes in at about 412 meters, I figure the bowling ball will strike the ground at terminal velocity.

The resultant shrapnel could be harmful/fatal to anyone within a few meters of the impact point. At the speed indicated, it would probably pass through an automobile entirely (roof and floorboard). A direct hit to a human would have the unfortunate result of pushing the victim's brain out his rectum.

All told, under controlled circumstances it would be quite interesting to watch, especially with high-speed cameras. Not something you'd want to do on a sunny Chicago afternoon with pedestrians and traffic below.

Anyway, you might will need some surface maintenance after any shot but beware, if it is a sanctioned league its NOT allowed. Maybe you will have to do some big adjustments on the approach...buildingwise...after every shot.

LOL!!!! Yeah the reviews on this site are pretty much next to worthless. Every ball hits like something else and they all destroy the rack. Sometimes I wonder when a ball will be made that hits like a bowling ball and leaves the rack in 1 piece.
