Dry Lane Ball
« on: February 14, 2012, 04:33:32 AM »

My Wed league has forgotten where they put the oil so now I'm in need of a dry lane ball. Any suggestions? Thanks

Luvmykings,

I could not imagine Irvine Lanes or Tustin Lanes being so dry. Maybe a change in hand release. Otherwise I do agree with Mike Austin. Pick up a Motiv Recon RX1 Silver. It is a great ball for dry with good recovery. Or if you want a little stronger cover but still good length get the Orange Motiv Recon RX1. It is a retired ball, but still can be found on a few sites. Also a good spare ball for the pesky 7's. I use mine at Fountain Bowl. Doing fine at a 220 clip.

Good luck.

Ok, since lumy won't give us any true info, there are lots of balls out there for dry/light oil lanes.None are bad, none are best.

Slingshot
Recon RX-1
Tropical Breeze
Avalanche Urethane
Blue Hammer
Chainsaw
Taboo Spare (polyester)
XXXL (polyester)

There are even some really old-fashioned pancake cores with resin or urethane covers:
Polar Ice (both solid and pearl urethane)
Scout (resin)

I have a 15lb 900G Link that I'm selling.  It gets 6 to 8 feet more length than anything else I have, but still finishes.  May work....

Amen to that Slate Blue Gargoyle! It definitely works. The Storm Naturals are great lite oil balls but on toast will ping ten-pins like crazy!

I have not tried the Chainsaw yet. Sounds promising. The 900 Global Link is a certified winner for sure. Ball doesn't move a whole lot yet drives and finishes well. My teammate has one, and I throw it better than he does!

As far as I can see, the Storm Natural is not for light oil unless you have high ball speed or polish it
The Slate Blue Gargoyle was also far too strong for light oil. Had one; I needed medium-light to almost medium oil to use it properly. Can't find them any more anyway.

The Storm Pearl Natural, if you shine it or have high ball speed, can work for light to medium-light oil.

I have a great Tropical storm(weak core strong cover),  Yesterday I just threw my new to Me Columbia Jazz.

Stronger core weaker cover(I feel).  Love the looks of it and roll!  Soon to drill for me to really know!

Let me ask the question ....

Do you mean the Heads, Mids, High Backend or the entire lane is toast..

Is there any oil in the middle of the lane?

If you cant find any oil period throw a plastic corner to corner with no wrist..

Ohhhh, I saw the post on the Sonic X!  I liked that ball.  But not the pearl!

I did not think of the highly polished Sonic X as for dry but as awesome for wet dry!  Almost like a 2 X 2 but with a nice backend!

@charlest: all the guys around here throwing Storm Naturals on lite oil have high ball speed. Good observation.

@zanatos: generally what we see around here are trashed heads and flying backends. There may be a little oil in the middle.

@ LuckyLefty: Yup! You're right on it. I own two Sonic-X's, one is scuffed and one is shined. Both are all about control and good, solid backend! There is no pronounced hook, just a nice gentle bend, and they work.

Sorry to hi-jack your thread luvmykings!!

The Track 300C is a smoother ball, as long as you don't drill it aggressively. The reviews for it are quite impressive.
I have done a lot of soul-searching for the same type of ball as the op wants and this is one I would buy if I had to fork out the cash. My speed is 13-14 m.p.h., semi-roller stroker/tweener with low to medium revs.

While it is Track's best ball for lighter oil, it is stronger than some others, like the Recon Silver, and the Slingshot. It is closer to the Orange Recon solid in overall oil handling and hook.

I can believe that... I've seen some guys doing it after being frustrated & bowl half way decent... I've seen some kids come in for open bowling & score with them as well...

I like those old Storm balls.  I have an original X-Factor that I play around with once in a while.  I had an O-seas release of the Trifecta, called the Perfecta with the Rad + core, but it cracked....

Like the user ID, mine should be luvmyblackhawks, LoL!!  Although they've been struggling lately...
luvmykings wrote on 2/14/2012 8:49 PM:@ Monster Pike. Funny you should mention house ball. Last week guy bowling against us pulls one off rack and shoots 687!!! Bit of a cranker and really did magic with that ball. I have most of the aggressive balls. Had an old Ace but still hooking waay to much.

As much as I hate to admit- The Tropical Storm balls are great on lite patterns. Although, if you are bowling on a Sunday evening when the lanes haven't been massaged since before Friday nite league - Just do plastic and work on accuracy. Nothing sucks more than dry to dry to greasy carrydown.

Regarding Wednesday nite league with light oil- your pro shop owner may be coordinating a deal with the lane master/mechanic to do that on purpose. He may be trying to sell/move some balls to match up with the "new" oil pattern.  Then, you and many others get suckered into purchasing new balls- only to see the pattern change to heavy oil again. The pro shop owner made some needed money and the mechanic gets a piece of the "action."

Overall- accuracy is the key. Period. I like symmetrical cores, reactive pearl covers, and weak layouts.  You can do it all that way. "Big hook" looks cool, but is not always the best way to score consistently. Accuracy baby! Yeah!
