Trustworthy ball reviews
« on: July 21, 2015, 10:00:34 AM »
When you read or watch ball reviews, what do you value most in the review?

Lane condition?
Bowler type?
Layout?
Comparisons to other balls in the line or ball it replaced? (For example, Boost line vs Hook! line)
Technical data?
Other?

What examples of you have of people doing it right? Justin Wi? Riggs?

Is there anything that hasn't been done that would make you interested in the results of said review?

I want to know what convinces you that a review is spot on and trustworthy. Reliable.

Just an honest opinion if it is a written review. (Riggs)

I like Justin's videos for motiv because he shows different layouts for the same ball on different lines along with comparing to previous releases. I know not everyone is able to do that, but for me that is the gold standard for videos

I throw mostly Motiv, so I don't look at most brands. For the Motiv reviews, you can't go wrong with JustinWi or MotivMags. Both are excellent and give multiple layouts and comparisons to other balls in the Motiv line.

I used to like the MotivGirl reviews. She has a simple easy swing that didn't overpower the ball. I think she is with a different company now though.

If I'm looking at a Storm ball, I go to Riggs site for his review first.
"If guns kill people, do pencils misspell words?"

"If you don't stand for our flag, then don't expect me to give a damn about your feelings."

The addition of a slower speed, lower rev bowler comparing balls in the lineup would be useful for a number of bowlers.
MOTIV Jackal LE .................40 x 4.5 x 40 p2.5
MOTIV Revolt Vengeance......45 x 4.0 x 50 p3
MOTIV Forza GT ..................50 x 4.0 x 70 p2.5
MOTIV Sigma Sting..............50 x 4.0 x 45 p3

I think most bowlers who hold value in video ball reviews don't realize the amount of work that goes into making a video that is half-way decent.  I believe Justin says it takes several hours to days to drill/setup/record/breakdown/edit a video.

I am going to repeat things already said I think. But honesty is important, be 100% truthful. Tell people when something doesn't work for you, what you did to try and correct it (different surface, different drill, add balance hole, etc.). I think Riggs reviews are an excellent example of this. From a video standpoint, I think you need first and foremost to detail everything, pattern, drill, etc. Some people forget to do that. Second would be to show the ball either on different patterns (from THS to Sport) or with different drillings and hopefully compare it to older balls from the company you are representing so people can relate it to something they may have or may have seen. Lastly, try to show it on more then just a THS, if possible. THS makes a lot of balls look good, but harder patterns will highlight the strengths and weaknesses of balls much clearer. I will agree Justin Wi's videos are some of the best I have seen.

spcm, I think you are probably correct. Most people don't have the time/equipment/resources to do all the things I have stated in a ball review video. This is where I think staffers could be very helpful and actually do a good job in promoting their company. Either they or their company should make sure they have the balls/lanes/software to make videos that really highlight the balls by doing the things mentioned in this thread.

You get the honest ball review when that balls successor comes out. For example sake, looking for a review on the Mastermind? You'll read how strong the ball is, how it comes back from anywhere on the lanes and how it's a must have for all styles, all conditions....etc. Then, check out a Mastermind Genius review and you'll see quotes like "The original Mastermind struggled through transition." "When your Mastermind burns up too early..." "When the ball rolls too early in order to make the turn down lane."

Read between the lines in the reviews and you'll get the info you want. Funny how that works.

The problem with video ball reviews is that people can edit out their bad shots.  On my last vid, I just turned the camera on for 8 shots, then shut it off when I was done.  Sometimes I want to see the ball squirt in oil, not recover or hook early and not strike if that's what a ball actually does.  It is also important to show people what conditions NOT to use the ball on (for me it was a Thug Corrupt leaving 7-10's from being WAY too much ball on a short pattern)

I think it was the late Sawbones who didn't care much about video ball reviews because one, they don't hit the same spot/break point. Two, all strikes.
