Help with 5 Step Approach
« on: December 28, 2006, 01:50:03 PM »
Okay, I've been recently taking some lessons, and my coach now wants me to switch to a 5 step approach to increase my speed. (used to throw 4)  Unfortunately, I can't get the timing down and my ball speed is actually decreasing. (I'm falling under 12 mph) Do you guys have any tips for things I should be looking for to work my approach out?

The easiest way is to forget all about timing.  Just imagine yourself at the foul line with a really good follow through and being posted with perfect balance.  See it in your mind.  Think about the great feeling when you just have cut loose with a great shot and you are rock solid at the line.  Just keep visualizing it ocassionally when you aren't bowling.  When you do get to the lanes, don't think anymore about what to do and when to do it.  See your finish in your mind, take one small step where you do nothing, and then let it flow.  You don't think about walking and your body does that just fine, so does it need your thoughts to make it to the foul line?  Not likely!

When I changed to 5 step , I was uncomfortable , so I made my first step into a small slide (copied Chris Barnes).
Small slide then into my normail approach. This really helped with timing, and now Ive definately got more speed.
