So first game in leagues tonight, I had a decent game going. Nothing spectacular but on pace for average.... then in the 9th frame I Had a terrible first ball and ended up leaving the 4, 6, 7, 9, 10. Sucks I know. Cost me average and cost the team the game.
So I’m like, just fire it out there and hope you can knock a few pins around. It’ll at least take some frustration out. So I do. Stand left, fire right. Hits the 6-10 perfectly, 6 pins falls across the lane. Somehow ricochets off the 7 and takes out the 4..... only problem was it came in front of the 9 pin.....
Any one else have similar or other odd things happen to them?

Try taking the 6-9 only off the rack, on 5 in a row.
Yep! This guy!!!
Better yet, leave a washout. 1-2-4-6-10. Throw at it, thinking you're going to pick it up like a 3-10... and go through the 1-6 gap cleanly, missing the entire lot.
Yep, again! This guy!! :-[ :o ???

Remember the summer series where Norm Duke was needling Brian Voss for missing the super washout?

We actually call that leave the dollar shot in our league. You leave it and everyone will yell dollar or more sometimes and the person who left it will try and hit the hole again without nocking any more pins down to win the money. We had a guy take home $100.00 once for doing it.

I'm legit 50% on makeable spares this season and still averaging 19x. I literally have zero focus, mechanics, balance on any back row leave. If it's chopable, I will chop it. Plastic, Resin, Urethane, Straight & Flat, Rotation & backing off the revs..... doesn't matter I'm missing everything right now.
I deserve to average 160, but if I made half the spares I'm missing, I would average 220 easily. No clue how this is real.
-
Every shot I threw with a Motiv ball was a how the f did that just happen situation.
-
One of my years for tryouts in college, I went front 7, missed a move and left a 4-6, strike in the 9th, went 2-1 first shot in the 10th and 7-10. That was one of the few games were I hit my target at the arrows breakpoint while having my speed within .3 mph every shot.

Hot take LOL.
House shots make everyone a better spare shooter except me. There's no thumbers that haven't missed a tenpin in years in my association because they wind it up and slow hook a backup ball coast to coast at it.
I'm need to take a more hack approach to this league stuff. No more time for watching the plastic slide and miss it by 1/4" right, or chopping the front pin off of every combo spare going straight and flat at it. :D
-
I think my favorite was at Nationals about 10 years ago. Leave the big 4. Just trying for the 6-10 for the count. Miss a little right hitting only the 10 pin which bounces off the back and side boards missing the 7 pin and taking out the 4. That's right, I picked the 4-10 off the big 4...

WRONG. House shot heroes aren't better spare shooters, they have (wait for it) TONS OF MISS ROOM!

I really cut down chopping pins when I started using Royal Compound instead of polish on my plastic spare ball. Get just a little tiny bit of turn on the end that helps. I naturally tend to make balls go fairly straight though so when I miss I know by the arrows. When you want to take the hack approach I'm your man :).

My response was really intended to explain how he's averaging 180 instead of 160. -- JohnP

How's this ....
Brand new pins, 7-10 split. I go after the 10 pin, bounce it out of the pit, hit the left sideboard, hit the 7 pin, SLIDE IT near the 4 pin spot and IT DOESN'T FALL.

Sorta like how I can only ever manage to pick up the 6-7-10 when I've left the big 4.....
-
A teammate left the 1-2-4-6-10 last Wednesday and on the spare attempt, went right through the 3 pin window and left all untouched!
-
Left the 1,2,4,10. Took out the 1,2,4, with wrap around the 10. The bowling gods are cruel!
-
I suppose it counts, I left the 4-6-7-10 in a tournament Sunday, and took the 7-10 off it without the 4 or 6 wiggling.
-
Watched a college kid leave 1-2-4-6-10 throwing big hook ball. He then threw big curve backup ball at spare and took out only the 2 pin. I couldn't help but crack up. Good thing we don't score like golf and have to clear all the pins because he may have needed 3-4 more shots at this rate.

I guess that would be known as the double super washout

Last night I was on the front 10 on a "Challenge" pattern (Beaten Path). Everyone in league stops to watch me as I finish out the game.
Anyways, 11th shot slipped a little outside, but I caught all of the ball at the bottom, and the ball screams off the outside into the headpin leaving the 3-4-6-7-9-10.
I've left my fair share of Greek Churches on hits through the face, but getting only 4 pins from clobbering the headpin while on the front 10 stung hard.

I'll raise you one better on that same leave, I did it with the front 11 for 294. I laugh about it now, but that night I wasn't the happiest person in the building, i'll tell ya that much lol

Left a solid head pin on a high flush hit, it spun it's way back to the 8 pin spot and stood. It was on a fill ball so it was actually way better than just striking, I wouldn't remember that strike 20 years later.

Back in 2001, my friend and I were going to bowl a JBT at Ocean Lanes. We drove to Ocean Lanes in Ocean City, MD 2 hours away. The tournament was at Ocean Lanes in Ocean City, NJ.
Then we got a speeding ticket on the way home.

Lesson learned here... Always carefully read the tournament flyer.

Mine is carry frustration. Twice in one season, I left a stone 8 pin on a 10 bagger. I seem to leave more than my share of 8 pins. Has to be a reason other than bad luck.
-
I have only turned my back on a strike ball once. I had seen others do it and it looked cool, so I decided to do it when I threw a ball that I knew was going to strike. I finally threw that ball, it came off my hand perfectly and was right on line when I turned my back as it reached 40'. I smugly walked back to the bowler's area to sit down when one of my teammates said "You left an 8 - 10". I didn't believe him, but when I turned around, there it was. I said to myself "Never again". And I never have. -- JohnP

Funny you had that happen. I missed it the bottom, the ball flattened out and hit the 6 in the face. The 9 must have been off spot because I only took out the 6. Was crazy. I also one took the 7-10 out of the Greek Church(that was bitter sweet)
-
Had the front nine once in a tournament, hit my ankle next shot and it went in the gutter. Also took the 9-10 out of a full rack, twice. Just a couple wtf just happened moments for me.
-
Man, weird stuff keeps happening. The guy I was bowling against tonight left a 6, 7, 10 and got the 6 and 10 but slid the 6 in front of the 7 missing the split.
-
Horrible first shot left me the 9/10 but the 9 was rattled and moved off the spot to the left just a little. My spare shot split the 9/10 perfectly and missed both of them.
-
Once back doored a 4 pin which slid into the 1 pin spot. Team gave me grief about nobody leaves a 1 pin in a rack, nobody.....
-
man i had another one in my sport league. not even sure how i left a 7-8. missed a little right and the oil took it down to far.
anyways, fired it down there, put the 8 into and back out of the pit to hit the 7 to make the spare.
-
a couple weeks ago i left a 1, 8, 9. i was really confused

haha me too. this sport shot stuff always gives me weird stuff
-
A month ago I was bowling a tournament and took the 6-9 off of a full rack.
No idea how the ball both managed to stay on the lane and retain enough energy to take the 6 through the 9 considering it was a 36' pattern.
-
Taken the 6,9 out of a full rack a few times. It’s just like hooking between the 3,10 baby split and missing both which I’ve also done. same deal. Pretty crazy, but not that uncommon. Saw a guy leave the 1,7,10 at a tournament this wknd, didn’t cover it, just got the head pin.
-
Similar I put the ball between the 3-10 and didn’t touch a one
-
I once the saw the 4 or 5 year old grandson of a teammate, get a 2 count while taking out just the 1 and 5. shouldn't be possible.
here is what I saw, the little guy was throwing the lightest ball the center had. he hit the head pin square; sending it straight back into the 5. the 2,3, 8 and 9 all wiggled, but all stood back up. the ball deflected from the head pin and ended up in the gutter just inches from hitting the 10.
-
3 years ago i was bowling at a house that was very dry and this kid was bowling a couple lanes down and when he threw the ball it had sort of a back spin (skidding forward but spinning backwards) and when it got to the dry it started rolling back to him! another thing i saw that was crazy, i was practicing around 5 years ago and there was some kid and his mom bowling next to me and i happened to look over and see the kid make the 4 6! no joke his ball was moving so slow it rolled over just enough to slide the 4 over into the 6. seeing the reaction of the kid and his mom i don't think either of them had a clue of what he just did.

I’ve never seen the 6-9 out of a full rack. Then you mentioned it. Then I saw it happen in our league. Weird
