Drag Release ... for burnt out heads ...
« on: January 05, 2007, 01:34:07 AM »
Was reading a bowling book yesterday and it was a
book that John Jowdy was somehow involved, and on
one page, they showed David Ozio executing a
"drag release" where it seemed like his back of
his hand was parallel to the lane with no lift.
The book suggested that your normal style would
not have to be adjusted, as to other alternatives
to dry lanes, such as loft, speed, and spinner
releases. Does anyone use this type of release
on burnt out heads ? Just curious.

A good friend of mine (lefty) uses that type of style when the lanes are fried.  He works the far left side of the lane with, believe it or not, heavy oil equipment.  He doesn't put any revs on the ball, other than what he gets naturally by letting the ball roll off his hand.  He relies on the core of the ball to naturally roll the ball toward the pocket.

The thing is, this guy can score like crazy on fried lanes using heavy oil equipment.  He uses a Big One and a Warp Zone for this, and probably averages 220 on this type of condition (35 pins above normal average), although it's tough to say because we don't have any official records.

If I'm understanding what you're describing then, yes, I've done that.  I used to carry a glove w/ metal "straps" both on the back and in the palm.  Bent those to hold my hand in an almost 90 degree cock (from my forearm), so I released coming right over the top of the ball, flat to the floor w/ no lift.  Worked great on truly fried lanes.  I mostly did this using an orange Pirahna, and played very deep swinging to first arrow.  The ball did nothing but roll; in fact was pretty much in a pure roll-out at the pins, but carried well.  Haven't seen anything dry enough for this in quite a while.

That's how the lefties in our area who want to score at all in one of our local centers are forced to bowl...  Maybe heavy oil equipment(ie particles)...but lots of surface slippy type stuff on the ball.

Can you say screeech...pavement!

Basically, look at video's of Johnny Petraglia, Mike Aulby, Pete Weber....there are others.  All of these players use a modified "drag" release.  Open handed and do not hit up on the ball nor impart any revs that are what I would term unnatural.  Watch their follow thru all stiff armed with their arms out to the side....no elbow bend.  This style works very well on burnt fried heads.  It is the best technique I've learned in the past few years.  I can use stronger equipment inside and my carry is much better because of the strength of the balls I can use on inside angles.
