Focusing
« on: February 20, 2005, 02:18:16 AM »
What do you do to focus?I need some serious help in this because i've been missing 9-pin spares about 2 or 3 times a game and i'm pretty much fed up with myself.I think it's my mental game but I don't know how to go about fixing it.My average has dropped about 10 pins just in the last 3 weeks(in all 3 leagues i'm in too.)It's getting ugly and I just don't know what to do.Any advice would be appreciated

We can't really teach you to focus.  It's somethign that you have to force yourself to do and teach yourself.

What do you do to focus?Do you just stare your mark down or what?

If your problem is strictly aiming issues, just teach yourself to stare your mark through the whole shot, even after you release.  This is asumming there is nothing terribly wrong with your physical game.

Yea,that's my problem.Aiming is what is wrong.I've assumed it's my mental game considering i'll throw a couple games over 200 and then for my third throw a 130 game.I've also been know to throw 4 or 5 strikes in a row followed by a gutterball. That's good advice though and i'll start doing that because I do follow the ball after I release it

I have a 3-step delivery because I want to go slow on my approach but I've been feeling that has just messed up my timing. All I really know is that I can't come within 3 boards of my target.

I generally try to just ignore whatever the situation is.

I look at the layout to decide what I would need to do... then I just take a deep breath and start my approach staring at the board I'm going to throw the ball from and about 1/2 way through look up a lil bit to get my positioning and just go for it.

I try not to overthink.  I tend to mess up if I actually think while I'm in approach.  I try to visualize everything before I actually let myself start moving that way I let my reflexes take over.
