my bowling balls have lost weight....why?
« on: January 12, 2021, 09:56:44 AM »
Just today I realized that my bowling balls, the ones I have had for awhile do not have the weight they used to have. Since I have had a scale that I can accurately measure the weight of a ball(got one to verify the weights of balls I would purchase). The ones that have been on the racks in my bowling room/utility closet and the overflow rack in the hall closet are not the same weight they were. I am not talking about the couple of ounces you lose from drilling.  The balls I have had for awhile that were 16 pounds or right about when I got them are now coming in at 15lb 5 or 6 ounces. My white dot which is always in my 4 ball league bag unless I am bringing the 6 ball bag somewhere didn't lose as much as the others--it was bout at 16 pounds and now is 15lb 9 oz.

I know what you might be thinking.....maybe your scale is out of sorts..but no, this fall while I was recovering from my hip replacement surgery I bought a nib 16 pound visionary glowing amulet bowling ball...have started bowling again, but have not yet drilled that ball and it weighed in at 16 lb 2 oz. I never knew this was possible..the only thing I can relate to it was years ago ...lat 80's a guy in the league I was in grabbed a ball out of his garage and it gained weight and was about 17 pounds. Has anyone ever seen this happen(losing weight) , and any reasons that could be.
Now that I am 51 and don't have that much ball speed to begin with I don't mind them being lighter but I would like to know why that is just to understand it.

Too much salad? :-)

I have had the same thing happen with older balls. It seems there is some kind of evaporation/diffusion that happens to the resins. The balls I had it with also decreased in diameter quite a bit.

I have seen variance on my scale by positioning the ball in different orientations.  cg facing in/out, etc.

I guess cg does matter....
sorry, i'll see my self out...

It's probably the effect of the earth turning a milisecond faster this year or maybe Qanon has launched a program targeting bowling balls

What BS

Clearly, you just forgot to feed them!

My Columbia Rage had a circumference issue which the quarter scale eventually wouldn’t stay on it while still under warranty.  Good old Dale took care of me and replaced it. He was surprised when he checked it when I sent it in.

The average weight change seems to be approx 8 oz .....I am seeing this in my reactives, my 2 plastics wd and clear wolf, and my 1960's rubber ball I bought nib a few years ago.  However my jpf black axe which is true urethane is holding at 15 lb 12 oz ....close to where It was when I bought it and my desert ops which is 80% urethane ...that one changed a little bit more than the axe but not as much as the rest.  Just to make sure it wasnt my scale I reweighed my nib undrilled visionary glowing amulet(hard urethane) again, which was a recent aquire(november) and that still comes in at 16 lb 2 oz ...quite odd.
