Spin off the old and frustrated post
« on: November 12, 2006, 02:06:21 PM »
I was thinking.  What if you bowled in a house that didn't put down a wall, not even a small one. You average 190-200 and are tops in your house/town.  You enter a tourney, handicap, and bowl lights out b/c they put down the fine china.

You go to another tourney and do it again.  The tournament director threatens to rerate that person.  Would that be fair?

Fair, yes because the average does not represent the true skill level.

Wha?  So, I know a guy who avg'd 175 on a SS and almost 220 on THS.  Which of those "represent a true skill level"?  It would be unfair, but necessary, to rerate this guy.  If the center in question was the only one for 2 hours in any direction, why would it be his fault?

But on the other hand if the only center within 2 hours is complete china should that bowler be penalized with a high average when they go to tournaments?

There is no good solution.

But is it fair? Unless they are going to multiple tournaments no one would probably notice and would not be re-rated so it appears they are attempting to take advantage of this situation. Whether it is intentional or not isn’t the issue.

It is one of the biggest problems with bowling. Lane conditions for the most part are china but they can vary wildly.

Few other activities can dictate who the winners can be by adjusting the playing field but bowling can do just that.

Without a rating system on conditions how do you level the playing field? And even then someone would still happen to match up and make the condition appear easy.

OK, here is another scenario:

You are a house bowler, and you go to a tournament and this guy, who is the best in his town, averaging 190-200, comes in and bowls lights out, because they put out the China for this event.  You also shoot lights out, maybe even beating the other guy by a few pins scratch, but he wins because he gets 'cap, and you don't.

You go to another tourney and see this same guy there.  Because it's "not fair" to rerate the guy, he takes you to the cleaners again.

How does that feel?

How many more times will you continue to donate to this guy before you decide you don't want to play any more?  How many other bowlers might end up feeling the same way?  Answer:  Pretty soon, the tournament director who won't rerate this guy will have only one entry.

It is not his fault.  How about you, the guy he beats who bowls in a center that puts out china, but is the only center within two hours of where YOU live - is it YOUR fault?

BTW, if you haven't figured it out already, my answer to your original question is "Yes, it's fair!"
