Summer League
« on: July 09, 2003, 06:48:58 AM »
I joined a new summer league that the manager of the bowling center approached me about. It went like this, I was practicing at the bowling center before I went to work like I do once or twice a week. The manager was watching me have one of my better games (268-11 strikes) and I guess he thought I would be a good person to join this new league he came up with. It's called the "floating singles league". You don't have a set day or time to bowl, hence the floating part. You also don't know who you are going to bowl. You pick  a number out of a hat to determine who you bowl. The only constant is the bowling alley. I like it because it gives me some competition during what would be my practice time. I have plenty of time to practice latter on like on my lunchbreak. He has gotten a great response  to this league. He says he will do one in the winter just like it. I know that we won't be bowling on the same conditions. I usually catch them before they put out the oil. I would prefer they put the oil out as it helps my scores. Even so I like the fact that it doesn't hurt my family time. I was wondering what you guys and gals thought about such a league? Pros and cons?

I agree with you .. it does sound interesting .. How do you identify when you are about to bowl in the league? What I mean is .. do you have to identify that you are there for the league just like you prebowl for a league?

It does sound interesting .. would be good for people who work nights! people who don't want to be tied down for FRI at 6:30 for 36 weeks! Sounds good to me ..if we had a league like that I would try it!

Well what happens is I usually practice weds.morning. So I told him that I would use that as the day I bowl in the league. So when I show up wed. morning they are ready for me. today they were ready with the numbers for me to pick out of the hat. I have no idea how I did. I'll know at the end of the week or next time I show up for practice. They usually put me right in front of them. the joint is usually empty when I go. I don't know what they would do  if the place was packed.

Besides the flexibility, I think this is a great way for bowlers who don't have league time to still see how they stack up against other bowlers.  We always wonder that now don't we...

I am not sure if it is sanctioned yet. It is an experiment. I was meaning to ask that very question. I will be sure to ask that question next Wed. when I go bowling there again. I haven't filled out a sanction card yet.

we have something called a drop in league. 3 people per team. You can just show up on tuesday night and sign up. don't have to come every week. You get a ticket and then they draw numbers to decide who is on what team. They pay out for every 3 teams that enter.

Winning and Losing are both very temporary things. Having done one or the other, we move on. Gloating over Victory or Sulking in Defeat is a good way to Stand Still.
