Watching him make the change to the backup ball in matchplay to make the run just to get on to the show was wild.

I think it's hilarious with all the people who hate it. That is a major skill/talent and not easy to do

Exactly, he just didn't all willy nilly decide to throw a backup ball and hope for the best.  Obviously he's practiced it, and have to have the guts to do it for a national title is pretty impressive.  Congrats to him.

FURTHER PROOF THAT THE LEFT SIDE IS WALLED! #JUSTICEFORRIGHTIES

We have a one (Right) handed bowler in a league who can throw it equally well with a hook or a backup ball. His average is around 215.

Most of the time he uses the backup ball but some nights he simply switches to throwing a standard hook ball and throws a backup ball at all his right hand spares.

If you have the skill more power too ya.

Same with bowling 2 handed. If I thought my old bones would let me I would try but I can't get into those positions.

I bowled with a guy 40 years ago who could average 200+ with a backup ball if the left side was better than the right.

Tell em, I also walked 40 miles one way to the bowling center in a blizzard. With no coat or shoes. I shoot 535 and let me tell you, they were really tough. Back when bowling had integrity!

Sheeeeiiiitttt, that ain't nothin. I used to have to carve my own ball, out of wood. And, and I also had to make my own pins. We didn't have any namby-pamby lane oil. We had bacon grease and was glad to get it.

Oh wait, I only started bowling 10 years ago, so I might be mistaken. My bad.

But stay off my lawn anyway...

For it to be “bowling” the release must be AS I DEFINE TRADITIONAL!

As long as you throw it similar to me or worse, it’s fine. If you do anything that I cannot release wise I want it outlawed.

Hey it worked for all the geezers whining through Facebook about motion holes.

Bet Belmo is practicing and fine tuning his backup ball skill as we speak.  Can't let this youngster best him as the "king of the lanes". Stay tuned!

If the only thing someone have to whine about in your life is motion holes, I hope they never have to deal with anything potentially important in their life. #shutupandbowl

Kudos to the kid.

He has a style and ability that few, if any, others could hope to do.

I’m 58 now, and have only one issue with what transpired, and it’s NOT what he did.

It’s that he had to do it.

I mean c’mon, it’s 2018 man. With all the great technological breakthroughs we’ve had in bowling in the last couple of decades, why are we still struggling along with playing surfaces and conditioners that just won’t stand up under normal playing conditions?

I guarantee you, throwing a backup ball is NOT his “A” game, and, even though he is evidently proficient at it, it is disappointing that he would have to go to it as his emergency backup plan. (No pun intended)

He did it, he’s good at it, and he won with it. Congratulations to him all around.

Just disappointed in the playing conditions he must’ve had to deal with to make him have to go to that shot style to compete.

Oh well, guess I really am just an old fart anymore.

About 5 years ago we had a guy (right hander) in our Monday night men's league who threw a backup ball on every shot and averaged in the low 200's.  As I remember, no one was concerned or thought "traditional" bowling was in jeopardy or on the way out.
Most of us respected his ability to do something that most, if not all of us could not.
Anthony Simonsen proved he had a hidden talent on top of all his other talents to do something legal with a bowling ball to win when he needed to win.  So I say congrats and kudos to him.
I also feel we may see others use this as a weapon in their bag of skills to win in the near future.  I always wondered why to date we have not seen many pros use a backup ball for the 2/8/10.
Many feel threatened by change (in bowling), but I see it as no different that the high flying hoop slam dunk or the 3 point shot in basketball.
Change keeps us from getting bored or at least it does for me.

You know, after the 2017 us open, where people were lofting the gutter at the beginning of the squad, I'm surprised this hasn't become a.weapon in lots of games.
