Title: Finger Grip Size Question
Post by: Brickguy221 on September 28, 2008, 01:42:08 PM
I currently use Turbo Quad Finger Grips in sizes 13/16 & 25/32.

I want to try some Vise Grips in power lift, power lift oval, and oval.

My question is....are the sizes in Vise the same as Turbo or does Vise run a bit big, small, etc???

I believe they should be similar size-wise.

Thanks clay. I know that some companies sizes don't match the Turbo sizes, but can't recall which. Seems for instance that 10th frame sizes run a wee bit smaller than Turbo, but don't remember for sure if it was them or another company, thus my reason for checking on Vise.

I think Vise-grips run slightly larger.
When I use Vise instead of Contour Power, I go from 25/32" & 3/4" to 49/64" & 47/64".

In reality, I think more depends on how sharp the 31/32" drill bit is. When my driller has his sharpened, no matter which grip brand I use, I have to open up the hole slightly with sandpaper to insure that the grip is as large as my fingertips will ever be.

Wow!

So which company's inserts are not the size they say they are? I know they are different as far as texture and their softness (feel), can we be going to different sizes for that reason instead of their actual size?

Maybe I'm way off base here, but if they say it's a 3/4 I tend to believe it's a 3/4.

Ah, belief! Corporations and religions love "belief". It makes propaganda, I mean, advertisement so worthwhile ...

Jeff,

That's no help to me. If you have truly experienced a difference in size and can verify it somehow I'd like to know. I trust your judgement 99.9% of the time.
What did you want 100%?

On edit: These little units are poured into some kind of mold, so if the mold is incorrect, I can understand it.
Our shops use Vise so I don't have too much experience here, except when I pull out a Turbo and replace it with a Vise that's supposedly the same size no one has told me it felt larger, or smaller, etc.

Lane,

All I can "verify" is what I already wrote: I use the Vise-Grip half sizes  (49/64" and 47/64") because Vise's 25/32"and 3/4" were larger than Contour's. Since these are ovals, I have no way to gauge which one is the "right" 25/32" and 3/4" size. Hell's bells, I don't even know which direction is the measured one on a soft oval grip: left to right or up and down.

I can't comment on Turbo. I tried them once and didn't like the feel of them. Never touched one again. Same with Tenth Frame's grips.

That stuff about "belief" was just socio-economic/religious commentary, off the top of my not-yet-had-morning-coffee brain. Sorry.

Brick  --  If there's a pro shop in your area that carries the Vise Grips, let them size them and put them in for you the first time.  Then you'll know what size to order in the future.  --  JohnP

When I worked in a shop I know that different manufactures had slightly different feel/size for the same number.

We used primarily vise grips.

The manufacture seemed to be consistent in their sizes from batch to batch but I don't know if it was the molds or maybe material used, you would get a slightly different feel between the manufactures using the same size.

I understand, Jeff. Thanks.
I know they feel different from one brand to the next. In fact, the clear ones from Vise are even softer than the other colors, so I did try a half size smaller when I used them to compensate for the extra "stretch" since I use Vaccu Grips. I'm not sure it was a good idea because the tips of my fingers were throbbing before league was finished. Lesson learned the hard way... again.

Vise seem a bit larger to me as well. Especially going to them from 10th Frame.

I also found that Turbos are a bit smaller though the Turbos are imho softer...
I use the same size (by numbers) and I am happy.

The clear Vise-grips are the ones I use, because they were softer. Funny I use them for when my yellow Contours don't go with the color of the ball somehow. But they have so much "uncolor", that in some of the darker centers, I have to rotate the ball around a lot to find the finger holes. Even saying that sounds funny. Sometimes I'm almost frustrated trying to find the holes ... ,  especially on my dark spare ball.

Thanks to all that have responded here.

The reason I didn't go to a pro shop to check out Vise for the right sizes is because the two shops in my area don't carry Vise. There are other shops, but they are 25 miles or more from where I live. The two shops in my area both carry only Turbo.

From what I have learned since writing this topic, I found that Charlest is correct in that Vise runs a wee bit larger. Grayson and Cobalt Bomb indicated likewise. Thanks guys for your input. It was appreciated.
