Build your own approach
« on: October 16, 2004, 03:32:25 PM »
I have an idea that I think would do wonders for my game. Building my own approach I'm serious about building my own approach out of wood of course but don't have the slightest idea how to do it.

I believe it is a matter of getting the right dimensions the right wood and the right finishing of the wood. I'm not trying to build a whole lane here

I had built an approach with a short stub lane, back in the 70s, in my garage.
Used 2x4s as a frame, with 3/4 inch plywood, put a laminate over it, and it worked well. The end of the stub dropped off into a pit filled with sand bags, to catch the ball. It was a lot of work, it weighed a ton . . . but it did help working out timing kinks.

Left it in my garage when I sold the house. Guy was a bowler....

I have a coach, I drift 2 boards I think to get the right feel of bowling you need your bowling shoes on and ball in hand. Who can afford to practice all day I know I can't this is the next best thing you can practice your whole approach and release with just an approach you could get hours of practice a day for free. Of course nothing takes the place of a lane but this is the next best thing it is worth a try.

A couple of boards of drift is nothing to worry about. If you can consistently drift a couple of boards trying to make it perfect is a waste of effort.
