Title: Fouling....
Post by: xxZonexx on October 04, 2005, 06:53:35 AM
last week fouls were turned on four out big money league as they should be i think. I normally dont foul but last week was a disaster. I was about 2" over the foul line about 5 times that night that sucks. so i figured if i moved back 6" i would be 4 inches away from the line. Wrong i still fouled no matter how far i moved back. I bowl to night at 9 any sugestions on how to stop fouling

Take smaller steps?  I had the same problem and ended up making serious changes to my approach.  Went from a four-and-a-skip approach to a legitimate five-step, and moved my starting position back a good 12 inches.

When you are fouling it is usually a symptom of fast feet. Check your tempo, it shouldn't be faster than your normal walking gate.

To check your speed, you can do this before they turn the lanes on, stand in your normal starting stance and place the ball in the middle of your belly, then walk toward the foul line. If you feel like you want to go faster than your normal walking speed then you are going too fast. Repeat this until you feel comfortable walking with the ball in your belly, then throw a shot using the same speed. This will take some time to get used to so be patient.

I would say to try and keep your armswing a bit shorter, so you'll get to your release a bit faster. I don't know, since when I used to have the problem, I just moved to the back of the approach like I do now!

PS...If you've got some SST shoes, try switching to the next lowest slide sole, so you won't slide as much! could work, but just be careful not to cause too much friction between you and the approach.

Perhaps something changed in your game. To make sure you never foul again but also making sure you don't feel like your slide foot is too far from the line also...do this old 80's trick by Aulby and Roth. Go to the foul line and step a foot in front of it. Take your normal steps like you would be going to the line but do it the opposite direction. Wherever your slide foot ends up is exactly where you should start. You can only move so far back unless you need to start in the pit area.lol

I have had problems with this in the past. My coach told me it was from pinching the ball. I have gotten my fit on my ball pretty good and now rarely foul. I also moved back about six inches on the approach. It just seems to be something that rears it's head once and awhile. Once you start doing it and thinking about it it seems impossible to stop fouling. I once threw a 180 something game that should have been 240+ except for 4 or five fouls ( two of them on doubles, ouch) Even double fouled on one frame in which both balls were perfect strikes.

Whether you think you can, or whether you think you can't... you're probably right.
