Approach Questions
« on: February 23, 2013, 11:47:22 PM »
Hey BR world!

I haven't been on in ages, and felt the urge to return and write a post or two, haha.

So last year, I broke my middle finger on my bowling hand.  That was in April, and I didn't start bowling again until Fall leagues started up in September.   My span had to change to accommodate my hand injury.  Add that to the fact that my timing was atrocious from not bowling in a while, and it's been a struggle to come back.

finally took some video clips of myself, and noticed that my approach has gotten rather exaggerated.  I have a 4 step approach, and noticed that my pushaway has a hitch and is kind of loopy.  So by the time I take my SECOND step, the ball is just starting to fall down into the pendulum.  Come time to slide, my pendulum is nowhere near done and I find myself forcing my arm down, causing me to muscle the ball and be entirely too erratic with my release.

So, I tried to speed up my pushaway to be more in time with my feet, and I feel COMPLETELY off balance.  So that said, what advice would you guys give to someone who has feet that are too fast/arms that are too slow?  What could I do to better align my timing so when I slide, I'm in the power position and can come through the ball cleanly and with leverage.

Any and all help would be awesomely appreciated :)

See if that has any info that may be useful to you.  In other words, try the hinge method and see if that gets your timing closer to what you want.

You did not mention if you tried to shorten your first step to correct the timing issue.

This thread is wonderful!  I'm a few posts in, and watched the video.  I've never heard of this hinge method before so I did some snooping around and found a PDF about it.  This might take some practicing, by it's worth a shot.

Regarding my first step, I haven't paid attention to how long/short it is. Something else for me to be mindful of during my next practice session.

Thanks for sharing the thread and ideas!

i used to use a 4 step approach a long time ago.  someone showed me using a little 1/2 slide step for a first step, which put me in motion before the traditional other 4 steps, and helped my timing out a lot.

I stand with my right foot half a shoe back of my left, and start with my left to "complete" the step.  Then start the rest of my steps as well as my ball push off.

Just food for thought
